3 min read

Through June 27, the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued approximately 95 patents to Arkansas inventors and companies this year, including the following patents issued in June:

~ Barbara K. Bower of Hot Springs is one of the inventors in U.S. Patent No. 5,427,593 of “Analogs of Botanic Seed,” assigned to Weyerhaeuser Co. of Tacoma, Wash. The analog of botanic seed has a genetically tailored plant embryo that is encapsulated in a hydrated, oxygenated gel permitting the propagated plant embryo to be sown like natural seeds. In June, Weyerhaeuser, a $10.4 billion lumber company, entered into a sales and marketing agreement with AERT Inc., a Springdale company with extensive patent experience, to exclusively distribute and sale AERT’s plastic and cedar composite wood used in construction of outdoor decks.

~ Vincent R. Story of Mayflower is the inventor in U.S. Patent No. 5,426,821 of a “Wraparound Bathtub Curtain Rod.” The shower curtain rod has curved ends branching from the straight body to permit an inner curtain hung therefrom to follow the curved contour of a bathtub while permitting an outer curtain to extend to both of two parallel walls defining the shower stall.

~ David G. Korte of Siloam Springs is one of the inventors in U.S. Patent No. 5,426,264 of a “Cross-Linked Polyethylene Cable Insulation,” assigned to Baker Hughes Inc. of Houston. The cable insulation is designed for use with a submersible pump used in oil and gas wells and is stable at moderately high temperatures, does not swell or deteriorate when subjected to well fluids and is relatively inexpensive.

~ Kenneth Keller of Reseda, Calif., and Kenneth Hopwood of San Pedro, Calif., are inventors in U.S. Patent No. 5,424,622 of a “Dynamic Brake Assembly,” assigned to Baldor Electric Co. of Fort Smith. The invention relates to a dynamic brake assembly permitting rapid stopping of alternating current motors using direct current to create a breaking, magnetic field. Baldor, a manufacturer of high-efficiency electric motors and drives celebrating its 75th year of business, has approximately 1,700 employees in Arkansas and has Arkansas plants in Fort Smith, Clarksville and Ozark.

~ Michael P. Watson and Joe K. Sigler III, both of Fayetteville, are the inventors in U.S. Patent No. 5,421,758 of a “Scuba Fin.” The scuba fin uses a tall, thin shaft to elevate the front end of the fin and to provide reduced resistance when swimming. The fin reduces the effort required by a scuba diver in the water and reduces the risk of tripping on land.

~ Jay M. Bro, Philip M. Baerenwald and Peter J. Meyers, all of Plano, Texas, and Herbert C. Weiland of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., are inventors, in different combinations, in U.S. Design Patent Nos. D 359,532, D 359,314 and D 359,078 of designs for a “Toy Turtle Figure,” a “Toy Riding Horse” and an “Aquatic Toy,” all assigned to Today Kid’s Inc. of Booneville. Today Kid’s, a perennial award-winner for its toy designs, has obtained approximately 29 patents since 1988, including 12 in 1995.
