Mike Bieker Appointed Director of University of Arkansas Press

1 min read

Mike Bieker was recently appointed director of the University of Arkansas Press in Fayetteville. He is taking over for Larry Malley, who retired in December.

“The University of Arkansas Press has built a strong reputation among its peers, and Larry Malley played a vital role in that success,” said Jim Rankin, vice provost for research and economic development at the University of Arkansas. “I trust that Mike Bieker, who worked alongside Larry for many years, will continue to guide the Press to new heights.” Bieker plans to encourage input from the university’s faculty on the press’ role as a publisher of scholarly and creative work, saying, “Engaging the faculty in the activities of the Press is essential to our success and will be one of our top priorities going forward.” The press was founded in 1980 and is known as one of the nation’s premier publishers of poetry, though it also focuses on regional and national history.

Bieker has been with the press since 2004 and most recently was its business manager and assistant director. His background is mostly in business, starting with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, and includes stops as a CPA and auditor, as well as a financial analyst at Tyson Foods. Bieker is currently the treasurer-elect for the board of directors of the American Association of University Presses. Bieker also chaired the AAUP’s Business Systems Committee.
