Donald J. “Donnie” Frederic, chief executive officer of St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Russellville, died of an apparent heart attack on July 4 while on vacation in Montreal. He was 60.

Frederick became CEO of St. Mary’s in January 2012. Immediately prior to the Russellville job he had been president and CEO of Louisiana Medical Center & Heart Hospital in Lacombe, but he had previously worked as an executive at three Arkansas facilities: Arkansas Heart Hospital in Little Rock, Northwest Health System in Springdale and Bates Medical Center in Bentonville.

Funeral services were held over the weekend in Louisiana, and a memorial service is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday at Humphrey Funeral Home in Russellville.

At St. Mary’s, Frederic oversaw the investment of approximately $25 million in capital expenditures from parent company Capella Healthcare, which paid for a expansions in cardiology, cancer treatment and diagnostics, as well as the 48,000-SF Millard-Henry Clinic.

He served on the boards of directors of the Russellville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Alliance for Economic Development, where he was treasurer. He had also been appointed to the state’s new Healthcare Quality & Payment Policy Advisory Committee.

He and his wife, Jeanne, had been married for 22 years.
