Dustin McDaniel Reaches Settlement with National Police Defense Foundation

1 min read

The New-Jersey-based National Police Defense Foundation has agreed to pay $120,000 in restitution to Arkansas donors and to permanently stop fundraising activities in the state.

Attorney General Dustin McDaniel announced the settlement Tuesday, the same day it was filed in Pulaski County Circuit Court.

NPDF is alleged to have solicited money from Arkansans who believed their contributions would benefit emergency responders in the state. McDaniel sued NPDF and USA Publishing Group Inc. of Conway in July 2013. The suit against USA Publishing, the company retained by NPDF to solicit donations, is still pending against its owners, William and Kathleen Parker.

“NPDF has been identified as one of the nation’s 50 worst charities, and the organization demonstrated its failings in Arkansas through its deceptive efforts to make consumers believe their money was going to police officers, firefighters and other emergency responders,” McDaniel said in a news release. “Of the thousands of dollars raised by NPDF and its fundraising partner, only a few hundred dollars were actually used for charitable purposes.”

NPDF paid $171,193 of the $231,004 it raised in the state to USA Publishing. According to McDaniel’s lawsuit, $500 went to charity. NPDF denied the allegations.
