Hendrix College in Conway has been selected to receive $122,640 in federal grant money toward completing a walking trail at the Hendrix Creek Preserve.
The Arkansas Highway Commission chose the college along with a number of other recipients for the Recreational Trails Program funds.
The Arkansas State Highway & Transportation Department will administer the grant to Hendrix. The grant requires participant matching by at least 20 percent of the total project cost, which, in Hendrix's case, is $153,330.
Hendrix, a private college, owns the 95-acre mixed-use development The Village at Hendrix and the nature preserve adjacent to The Village's shops and homes. An under-construction trail borders the Hendrix Creek Preserve.
When it is completed, the trail will provide a handicapped-accessible gravel walkway around the preserve.
Lawrence Finn, chief operating officer for the The Village at Hendrix, said the trail would make the preserve accessible to the public for educational and recreational purposes.
