Heifer Foundation Marks 20 Years

Heifer Foundation of Little Rock is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and is seeking to increase its assets from its current $71 million to $250 million in three to five years, said Domingo Barrios, president and CEO of the foundation.

"It's an aggressive agenda, but part of the reason we believe it's important to be aggressive is that we are truly trying to mitigate any increase in hunger and poverty in the world," Barrios said.

The foundation was founded in 1991 to provide ongoing financial backing for Heifer International of Little Rock, an international nonprofit that works to end hunger and protect the environment.

 

Dean of UA Graduate School Named

Todd G. Shields, the interim dean of the University of Arkansas Graduate School and International Education, has been named dean of the Graduate School, effective July 1.

A professor of political science, Shields has been interim dean since July 1, 2010, while also serving as interim associate dean for academic affairs of the Clinton School of Public Service in Little Rock.

Shields also is the director of the Diane D. Blair Center of Southern Politics & Society in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts & Sciences. His interim appointment at the Clinton School ends June 30, but he will continue as director of the Blair Center.

 

Jim Argue, Wife to Be Honored

Former state Sen. Jim Argue and his wife, Elise, will receive the Make a Difference Award during the 28th anniversary celebration of Treatment Homes Inc. on June 28 at the Governor's Mansion. The award, which has been presented since 2003, recognizes people whose work has improved the lives of foster children in Arkansas.

The event, which starts at 6:30 p.m., will include dinner, live entertainment, a live and silent auction and the awards presentation. Also being honored are Renée Fair as a THINC Angel, CAMS Club of Sherwood and Cabot Office Machines for their long-term support of the organization.

During his long tenure at the Arkansas Legislature, Argue "advocated major improvements in the quality of curriculum and instruction, including mandatory access to AP courses for all Arkansas high school students," Treatment Homes Inc. said in a news release.

 

Delta Trust Opens Conway Office

Delta Trust & Bank of Little Rock is opening a loan production office in Conway. Michael Bynum of Conway will head the office in his capacity as Conway market president. Bynum has 13 years of experience in the banking industry, most recently serving as senior vice president and senior commercial loan officer at Centennial Bank of Conway. The new Delta Trust loan production office will be at 805 Monroe St., Suite 104.

 

Nonprofit CEO Joins Marketer

Betsy Reithemeyer, formerly CEO of the Jones Trust in Springdale, has been named vice president of global communications for marketing firm Saatchi & Saatchi X of Springdale. The post is a new position, the company said in a news release. Before joining the Jones Trust, Reithemeyer spent 27 years with Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and the Wal-Mart Foundation, where she served as executive director.

 

UALR Prof Gets $400,000 Grant

Lifeng Lai, assistant professor of systems engineering in UALR's Donaghey College of Engineering & Information Technology, has received a National Science Foundation grant to help fund his work on making cell phone transmissions more private and secure.

The $400,000 five-year Faculty Early Career Development Program, is the NSF's most prestigious award in support of junior faculty "who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations," UALR said in a news release.

 

SBA Offers Export Planner

The U.S. Small Business Administration has developed a free online tool to help small businesses seeking to start or expand sales of their goods and services overseas. The Export Business Planner helps small businesses develop a customized export business plan. The planner is available at SBA.gov/ExportBusinessPlanner.
