Duke, 58, has been Wal-Mart's international division president. He succeeds former CEO Lee Scott, who remains with the company as chairman of the executive committee of the board.
Analysts have said that Duke should maintain continuity because of his 13 years of experience at Wal-Mart, which included time spent in logistics and at the head of the international division.
