Walter E. Hussman Jr., who is also president and CEO of Wehco Media Inc., was announced as the winner Monday and will be featured in a profile to run in the magazine.
The E&P story calls Hussman a "contrarian", who goes against the "conventional wisdom" of many in the industry.
In contrast to other newspapers, the Democrat-Gazette aspires to remain a paper with reach across the state, according to the article, and Hussman disagrees that a newspaper must focus its coverage on local issues in order to remain viable, according to the article.
Hussman also maintains that publishers should quit providing news and information for free on their newspaper's Web sites. Hussman wrote an op/ed piece in the Wall Street Journal in May 2007 arguing against posting news online for free.
The Democrat-Gazette is also one of the only metro dailies to gain circulation, according to a story published online by E&P.
The Democrat-Gazette runs a subscription-based news site, www.arkansasonline.com.
