E.C. Barton & Co. Buys 56-store Chain

E.C. Barton & Co. of Jonesboro, a building materials, lumber and home improvement retailer, has purchased the 56-store Grossman's Bargain Outlet chain.

The stores in Ohio, New York, Rhode Island and Massachusetts join 66 existing stores in the Barton family, but they will continue to be operated under the Grossman's name.

E.C. Barton & Co., led by CEO J. Niel Crowson, ranked 48th on Arkansas Business' recent list of the state's largest private companies. It reported $163 million in revenue during the fiscal year that ended Oct. 31, up from $143 million the previous year.

Founded in 1885, E.C. Barton & Co. had 475 employees before the Grossman's purchase, and a press release on the purchase said it now "employs more than 1,300 partners at 122 locations in 12 states." E.C. Barton spokesman H.R. McDonough said he didn't know how much the new stores would add to annual revenue, and no financial details of the transaction were disclosed.

The company purchased the Grossman chain from Jeld-Wen Inc. of Klamath Falls, Ore., which is best known as one of the world's largest window and door manufacturers.
