• Tyson Foods Inc. of Springdale has donated $26,000 to the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Inc. to support the nonprofit's leadership education efforts. A majority of the money will be used to fund scholarships in six congressional districts where Tyson operates plants. Tyson also was recently named Corporation of the Year by the Arkansas Regional Minority Supplier Development Council for exceeding standards for corporate diversity and demonstrating leadership and a genuine commitment to minority businesses.
• The University of Arkansas at Fayetteville reached a record enrollment of 17,821 students, a 3.2 percent increase from fall 2004 and the largest ever in the university's 134-year history. Enrollment is up 21 percent since John A. White became chancellor in 1997 and pledged to increase enrollment.
• Gov. Mike Huckabee said during a visit to Iowa that he is pondering a run for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination and that he will make a decision in about a year.
• A 1,600-acre industrial site in west Tennessee has received megasite certification from the Tennessee Valley Authority, which means it is ready to go as a site suitable for auto manufacturers. The West Tennessee Auto Park industrial site is at Fruitvale, about 60 miles northeast of Memphis and 15 miles from Jackson.
• William H. "Buddy" Sutton has been elected to the board of directors of Twin City Bank in North Little Rock. Sutton has been with Little Rock law firm Friday Eldredge & Clark since 1959 and recently retired as managing partner but remains "of counsel."
• W. Scott McGeorge has been named to the board of directors of Simmons First National Corp. in Pine Bluff. He is president of Pine Bluff Sand & Gravel Co., senior vice president of McGeorge Contracting Co. and vice president of Cornerstone Farm & Gin Co.
• The SBC Foundation, the charitable giving arm of SBC Communications Inc. of San Antonio, is doubling its employee match-pledge to $2 million for Hurricane Katrina relief after employees and retirees in Arkansas and other states topped the original $1 million match. The potential now is $4 million for Katrina relief. SBC Arkansas has about 4,000 active employees and retirees in the state. The funds are pledged to the American Red Cross.
• The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock has received a $4.5 million grant for its Center for Addiction Research. The money will be used to continue studies on substance abuse and computerized treatment. The studies focus on outpatient treatments for people addicted to opiods, such as oxycotin or heroin.
• Hugg & Hall Equipment of Little Rock held a grand opening last week of its newest location at 1095 Collier Drive in Conway. The 7,500-SF branch is the sixth Hugg & Hall branch in Arkansas.
• Dr. Les Wyatt, president of Arkansas State University at Jonesboro, will give his fourth annual report to stakeholders in the central Arkansas area on Sept. 28 at 11:30 a.m. at The Little Rock Club in the Regions Bank building.
• Heifer International will host Peter Mann, the international director of the World Hunger Year, at an all-Arkansas dinner and discussion. The event, "Eating From the Same Table: The Power of Local Foods," will be held at the Wyndham Riverfront Hotel in North Little Rock at 6 p.m. Sept. 27. Tickets are $10.
