The Arkansas chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators honored Arkansas communicators during a ceremony Thursday in Little Rock.

The association named Philip Mann, director of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, its IABC/Arkansas 2012 Communicator of the Year, honoring Mann for his innovative communication in creating connections between music and audience.

Mann is in his third season as director of the symphony, which has seen audience and artistic growth and financial health under his leadership.

IABC/Arkansas also honored Charlotte Schexnayder, former state legislator and editor and publisher of the Dumas Clarion in Desha County, with a John K. Woodruff Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Schexnayder and her late husband Max bought the Dumas Clarion in 1954. The couple sold the paper to Emmerich Newspapers of Jackson, Miss., in 1998.

The organization presented 94 other awards at the event to recognize excellence in communications, marketing and public relations.

The IABC is a global network of more than 16,000 communication professionals in more than 70 countries. The Arkansas chapter provides professional development opportunities through monthly luncheons and annual workshops.

IABC/Arkansas' members represent such fields as advertising, the arts, broadcasting, education, fundraising, graphic design, government, health care, marketing, printing, public relations, publishing, volunteer and events management, Web development and writing.
