Arkansas Ranks in Top 10 With School Children in Poverty

In 2011, Arkansas tied for 10th place with Alabama among the 50 states and the District of Columbia in percentage of school-age children (ages 5-17) in poverty, a recent U.S. Census Bureau report shows.

The bureau’s Small Area Income & Poverty Estimates program details poverty estimates for the total population of the United States and annual median household income for all counties and states. Of Arkansas school districts, 71.2 percent had poverty rates of more than 20 percent of their students.
