Allens is scaling back its workforce in Van Buren and plans to incorporate more jobs into its Siloam Springs canning location, according to a report.
Fort Smith’s TheCityWire.com reports that 150 jobs will be leaving the vegetable processor's Van Buren location, calling the move “another blow to the Fort Smith regional economy.” The closure is effective today and no there is word on how many of those positions will be relocated to Fort Smith.
A call to Allens was not immediately returned.
Allens sold four of its food plants in March of 2012, announcing then it would focus on its "core business." Those plants were located in New York and Wisconsin and employed about 400 people.
Allens still owns two plants in Montezuma, Ga., which specialize in frozen breaded vegetable products and Southern-style frozen vegetables. The company says it is investing in technology and increased capacity at its Arkansas, North Carolina and Wisconsin facilities.
Arkansas Business will update this story.
