Census Says Education Spending Falls

Fiscal year 2011 saw the first decline in public education spending per student since 1977, the year that the U.S. Census Bureau started collecting data on such outlays, the bureau recently reported.

The 50 states and the District of Columbia spent $10,560 per student in 2011, a decrease of 0.4 percent compared with 2010. New York spent the most per pupil at $19,076. Arkansas spent $9,353 per elementary and secondary student in 2011.
