Update: More on yesterday's explosion and fire at an Advanced Environmental Recycling Technologies plant in Springdale. KFSM-TV, Channel 5, says neighbors are concerned about safety and demanding more than just another OSHA investigation. KFSM details the long history of fires and investigation, and AERT says it will disassemble the silo where the explosion took place.
Just days after a fire at an Advanced Environmental Recycling Technologies plant in Springdale killed one worker, there's been an explosion at another AERT plant in Lowell.
The Springdale Fire Department confirmed to KNWA that Lowell fire crews arrived around 7:30 after a silo exploded. Lowell fire chief Mike Morris said AERT had not been using the silo since a fire last month and were awaiting repairs.
No injures reported in today's incident. Last week's Springdale fire, which started in a mixing vat, sent three workers to a hospital with burn injuries. One of them later died.
AERT, a publicly traded firm that makes composite decking materials, is no stranger to fires on the job. There were two at the Springdale plant over 2008 and 2007. Also in 2007, AERT settled with an insurance company over a 2003 fire at a Texas plant.
