We recently wrote about delays in the $7.4 million renovation and expansion of the Queen Wilhelmina Lodge. Now we can confirm that the contractor responsible for the work has been taken off the job.
The lodge closed in March 2012 in advance of the renovation, and the contractor, Wade Abernathy Inc. of Mount Ida (Montgomery County), most recently estimated it wouldn’t be complete until spring 2014.
That was too long for the client, the Arkansas Department of Parks & Tourism. Executive Director Richard Davies said the department finally canceled its contract with Wade Abernathy a couple of weeks ago.
Davies said the department is “wading through this” and has been meeting with the company’s performance bonding company, Travelers Casualty & Surety Co. of America of Hartford, Conn.
He said a new contractor is being sought, meetings have been held with the project architect and the department is trying to figure out how much remedial work needs to be done before breaking even.
As for finishing the project by the revised deadline in December, “that may be a lost cause,” Davies said. “Those are all unknowns at this point.”
Wade Abernathy Sr. did not return a call left at his office.
