Construction on a $31.4 million road and bridge project in Newport could start by the end of the year.
The job involves reconstructing one mile of Highway 367 and building a two-lane White River bridge at Newport, according to a news release from the Arkansas Highway & Transportation Department.
The construction work is expected to be completed by the summer of 2016, said Danny Straessle, a spokesman for the AHTD. He said the work is expected to start by the end of the year, but could be delayed if there’s bad weather.
“This bridge is structurally deficient in that it is becoming too costly to maintain,” Straessle said.
The new bridge will be built just north of the site of the current bridge. Tanner Construction Co. of Ellisville, Miss., is the general contractor.
