Fort Smith Foundation Considers Osteopathic Medical School

We told you something was brewing.

In September, Arkansas Business' Mark Friedman noted early whispers of an osteopathic medical school for Fort Smith. The Arkansas Osteopathic Medical Association was cryptic when asked about it, saying it would release information on any plans "at the appropriate time."

Today, comes two reports out of Fort Smith that officials there are indeed investigating starting a school.

The Times Record and The City Wire both report that the Fort Smith Regional Healthcare Foundation is looking into creating an osteopathic medical school in Fort Smith, with the foundation's executive director detailing plans for a feasibility study over the next three to four months. Both reports say the foundation has the support of Community Health Centers of Arkansas and other groups, including the Arkansas Osteopathic Medical Association.

You'll recall that Arkansas State University is also considering putting an osteopathic school on its campus in Jonesboro. In November, ASU signed an agreement with the New York Institute of Technology to determine whether NYIT would want to handle education at the Jonesboro osteopathic school, should it become reality.
