An architecture professor at a Missouri university has been named the dean of the Fay Jones School of Architecture at the University of Arkansas.
Peter MacKeith, a professor at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, is set to become the UA school's dean, effective July 1.
"We are pleased to have Peter MacKeith join the University of Arkansas," Sharon Gaber, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, said in a news release. "His experience and leadership will help continue to propel the Fay Jones School to even greater heights."
MacKeith has served on the school's professional advisory board since 2011.
In the university release, MacKeith said he was "honored and privileged" to receive the position.
"It is a propitious moment for the university and for the school, with its rich legacy of design excellence and leadership, and with so much accomplished recently under Dean Jeff Shannon and Interim Dean Ethel Goodstein-Murphree," he said. "I look forward to building on that legacy and that good work, and, with the school's community, to creating further distinction for its programs."
Shannon, who had been dean since 2000, retired last May and returned to teaching. Shannon was the school's fourth dean.
MacKeith started at Washington University in 1999 as a faculty member and assistant dean of the architecture school. Two years later, he was named associate dean of architecture, and in 2006, the associate dean of the Sam Fox School.
He remained the associate dean until June 30 when he stepped down to concentrate on teaching and research, according to Washington University.
Before coming to Washington University, MacKeith was the director of the Master of Architecture - International Program at the Helsinki University of Technology, now Aalto University, in Finland. MacKeith has also held faculty positions in architecture at the University of Virginia, the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia and Yale University.
He is the author and editor of various writings on architecture, and was recognized by the President of Finland in February, for his contributions to the culture and architecture there, with the insignia of Knight, First Class, of the Order of the Lion of Finland.
MacKeith earned his bachelor's degree in English and international relations at the University of Virginia, and a master of architecture from Yale University. He's received two Creative Achievement Awards in architectural education from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture.
The Fay Jones School houses departments of architecture, landscape architecture and interior design. It also has two outreach components in the University of Arkansas Community Design Center and the Garvan Woodland Gardents, it's botanical garden in Hot Springs.
