Landscape Project Gets Underway in Jonesboro

A landscaping project at an entrance to Arkansas State University at Jonesboro is expected to cost about $150,000 and be completed in about two months.

The development is at East Matthews and East Washington avenues. The project is a collaboration among ASU, the city of Jonesboro and St. Bernards Medical Center, said Matt Parker, senior vice president of strategy and business development at St. Bernards Healthcare.

The approximately 2.5-acre site is divided by East Matthews Avenue. Each park will feature a 6-foot-deep pond with fountains, Parker said. It will have wildflowers and native grasses.

The area is between property belonging to ASU and to St. Bernards and is part of the Matthews Medical Mile, he said.

Parker said St. Bernards is paying for the improvements, while ASU has agreed to maintain the landscaping when the project is completed. And the city of Jonesboro will provide the equipment to build the ponds, he said.

“There’s been a good bit of collaboration between those three parties,” Parker said.

‎Martin Smith, a landscape architect at the Ecological Design Group Inc. of Wynne, was hired to design the project. Bennett’s Landscape & Development of Jonesboro is the contractor on the job.

“It’s going to be a very nice entrance into ASU,” Parker said, “and a very nice area if you’re traveling between ASU and St. Bernards.”
