Philander Smith College invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of Public Relations and Marketing. The Director of Public Relations and Marketing uses personal judgment and discernment regarding media relations, which is valuable in this position. The Director of Public Relations and Marketing reports to the Vice President of Institutional Advancement, who relies on the knowledge of the person doing this job through his/her connections to various media outlets, marketing strategies, public relations venues, and tactics - all needed to promote the image of the campus, its students, staff, faculty, and brand. Several meetings are needed to keep open lines of communications and the flow of ideas and strategies fluid, productive, and economically feasible. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (including, but not limited to): •Write, edit and develop contents for the Alumni and campus magazine. •Write, edit and generate contents for the college’s website. •Promote the college’s brand, mission, images and constituents through media relations, public relations and marketing venues. •Provide contents for the campus social media outlets, including Flicker, Twitter, Facebook, Tumbler and Word press •Produce electronic campus news letter. •Serve as event support for campus-wide events, including lectures, fundraisers, etc. •Provide other duties as assigned. PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS/COMPETENCIES: •Computer skills with a keen knowledge of coding, website editing and writing, programming and photo selections. •A keen knowledge of the Associated Press Style Book and journalistic style writing. •An understanding of data analysis and how it can be used to buttress the campus’ image and mission. •An open heart for listening, deciphering and determining what type of stories to write, edit, and include on the campus’ website, its publications, and advertising mediums. •A strong rapport with local, national, and web-based media personalities. •An appeal for social programs and activities that impact the lives of students. •An ability to supervise media production. •An capacity for maintaining a budget, comprised of advertising and print production REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: At least 5 years experience in the field of journalism, public relations, marketing, social media management and web contents management; Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Journalism, or Broadcasting; Master’s degree (in aforementioned areas) or liberal arts/literary services; Advanced education with several examples of published writing via print, web base, scripts for television, radio, film, or video.
