FAYETTEVILLE - Arkansas' search for a head football coach continues.
Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe will not be taking the job after all. Sources confirmed Grobe was offered the job on Wednesday and said he was expected to be named the Razorbacks coach on Thursday.
That changed overnight.
The Deacons sports information department confirmed to ArkansasSports360.com that Grobe, 55, will remain at Wake Forest. Officials at Wake Forest and Arkansas are denying an offer was made to Grobe.
Razorback Foundation board members approved a compensation package for Grobe Wednesday evening. The university's private, fund-raising arm must approve salaries as a final step in the hiring process.
Despite the board's approval, incoming athletic director Jeff Long denied in a statement released Thursday that a formal offer had been made.
"The search for a head football coach at the University of Arkansas is ongoing," Long said in the statement. "While I have been involved in detailed discussions with candidates, no formal offer has been extended and no agreement has been reached. I understand and appreciate the strong interest in the search by our supporters and fans. Our parameters for the search remain the same, finding the best head football coach for the University of Arkansas. We will continue to work expeditiously to that end and I'm confident that we will achieve our goal."
It is unclear what direction Long is headed in the search now, though Razorbacks defensive coordinator Reggie Herring and Tulsa offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn are believed to be possibilities. Herring and Malzahn have each had face-to-face meetings with Long to discuss the opening over the last week.
