Arkansas' Askew Charged With Theft, Marshall Avoids Arrest

FAYETTEVILLE - Defensive tackle Lavunce Askew was suspended from the Arkansas football team indefinitely, following an arrest for theft.

Askew, a 20-year-old sophomore from Camden, was arrested Saturday night after he admitted to police he stole a laptop valued at $1,300. He was later released on $2,500 bond.

According to the preliminary police report linebacker Matt Marshall was also involved in the incident, but returned an iPod Touch to the residence it was taken from and avoided arrest.

Details in the preliminary report indicate Askew took the laptop from a private residence. When the tenant of the apartment returned home from work around 4:30 a.m., he found that his mp3 player and laptop were missing.

Askew and Marshall were identified as being involved in the theft. Marshall left the iTouch on the doorstep of the apartment at about 7 a.m. Saturday and later assisted university and Fayetteville police officers in tracking down Askew.

While Marshall met with authorities in the parking lot of a local grocery store, Askew arrived with the laptop. Once an officer confirmed the laptop was the stolen computer and after reading Askew his Miranda rights, the football palyer admitted he stole the laptop.

Askew, according to the report, was not planning to sell the laptop. He wanted it "for school."

Following spring practice, Askew was listed as a third-team tackle behind Malcolm Shepard and Patrick Jones. Askew had five tackles, one quarterback hurry and one forced fumble in eight games with one start.

It is unclear what sort of discipline Marshall, a redshirt freshman defensive back from New Jersey, will face. Marshall did not play in 2008.
