WHY THE RAZORBACKS WON Eastern Michigan was as bad as advertised, and Arkansas was flat-out better. The Razorbacks held the Eagles without a first down until the third quarter, and by that point, Arkansas was already up 49-0. Quarterback Ryan Mallet had a solid performance (14-of-16 for 248 yards and three touchdowns) and Joe Adams had a stellar return with three catches for 109 yards and two scores. Arkansas also got scoring from all sides of the ball -- offense, defense and special teams. Eastern Michigan didn't have a chance.
KEY PLAY There wasn't really a key play that decided the game because, well, this one was over when it was scheduled. But let's go ahead and give it to Broderick Green's 99-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Green -- all 248 pounds of him -- lumbered down the sideline nearly untouched, thanks in part to a last-minute block from Jarius Wright. The score made it 35-0 Razorbacks and put Green past the 100-yard mark for the game and for the first time in his career. The run was the longest by a Razorback from scrimmage in school history and just the second run of 90 yards or more in school history. Billy Moore had a 90-yard run against Tulsa in 1962.
NEW STARTERS The Razorbacks had some new starters on Saturday selected "based on the evaluation by the UA coaching staff on effort given each in practice this week," according to Arkansas media relations. David Gordon, Broderick Green, Brett Haris, Anthony Leon and Terrell Williams made the first starts of their careers. Damario Ambrose, Alfred Davis and Reggie Fish also got starting nods.
NO MICHAEL SMITH Not like it mattered for this specific game, but running back Michael Smith didn't play Saturday because he re-aggravated a hamstring injury this week in practice. "It sure wasn't my decision to keep him out," coach Bobby Petrino said. He wasn't ready to play. He didn't get to practice and he wasn't ready."
THIRD-QUARTER SLIP-UP After holding Eastern Michigan without a first down until early in the third quarter, Arkansas' defense got sloppy. The Eagles scored 20 points in the third quarter and had defensive coordinator Willy Robinson a bit frustrated after the game. "Yeah, we won, but you can't give away that many plays, no matter who you're playing," Robinson said.
RED OUT The Razorbacks donned the all-red getup on Saturday. The red jersey and red pants looked pretty snazzy. Heck of a lot better than Tennessee's curve ball of black jerseys and orange pants that it wore against South Carolina.
BIG BLOCK OK, so it was a bit inconsequential, but Seth Armbrust's blocked punt and recovery for a touchdown was still pretty impressive. Armbrust, an Air Force transfer whose playing time is limited to special teams, broke through protection and nearly tackled Eastern Michigan punter Patrick Treppa as he blocked the kick. The ball ricocheted to the 1-yard line where Armbrust picked it up and stepped into the end zone to make it 49-0 with 12:38 left in the third quarter.
NOT THE BEST NIGHT Backup quarterback Tyler Wilson didn't need to say it because his coach said it for him. "Tyler didn't play as well as he's capable of," coach Bobby Petrino said of Wilson's lackluster performance. "He's obviously disappointed in the way he played." Though the stage was prime for Wilson to show his stuff, he struggled to the tune of a 5-of-11 performance. He also threw an interception and fumbled a snap, which is probably part of the reason Ryan Mallett was in the game much longer than expected.
PENALTY OF THE NIGHT You've got to wonder how often this happens. With 7:25 left in the third quarter, head referee Steve Shaw threw a flag and announced on the public address system a false start on Arkansas' "entire offensive line."
