ARKANSAS 81, APPALACHAIN STATE 72 (OT)
WHY THE RAZORBACKS WON
Arkansas won because its defense held up against a tired Appalachian State team in overtime. Freshman Marshawn Powell scored 29 points and the team hit four consecutive free throws in overtime to offset a 67.7 percent shooting night.
GAME BREAKER
Powell starred all night long, but he set the tempo with three-pointer to open overtime that helped the Razorbacks outscore Appalachian State 13-4 in the extra period.
SILENT NIGHT
Michael Washington went 4-for-12 from the field, scoring 13 points and pulled in 10 rebounds in 36 minutes of play. It was a very silent double-double for a player who dominated most of last season.
"He did some good things in the first half, he rebounded well for us," coach John Pelphrey said. "We got to get him back to attacking the rim though. We need him attacking the basket."
FUTURE FRONTCOURT
Washington may have struggled for most of the game Friday (more on that later), but it appears Marshawn Powell is more than ready to take over in the frontcourt. The freshman scored 29 points and picked up seven rebounds.
OFFENSIVE REBOUNDING
It was bad. Arkansas was outrebounded 15-5 on the offensive boards, and not one of those rebounds came from Washington. Jemal Farmer led the team with three, but Issac Butts (6) and Josh Hunter (4) led Appalachian State in the category.
