Get over it!!!! We have as much appeal as any other school in the SEC with the possible exception of FL. Ever been to Baton Rouge? Dirty, smelly town. Nothing stands out to me about Tuscaloosa. It's nice, but no nicer than Fayetteville. Knoxville is a great city, really beautiful. But you can see at Tn. what can happen when a coach splits the fanbase. It can ruin your program for several yrs. Thang goodness for BP and LK.

Since I was involved in the inner workers with Danny Bradley's recruiting from the family side, I can tell you that he chose OU over Houston because Lou Holtz straight out told DB that he would not be a quarterback but a defensive back. Bradley did not choose against Arkansa...

Bradley did not choose against Arkansas because he didn't want to go there, he wanted to go where he could be an option quarterback and he thought he could be Holtz' version of a veer option quarterback, but Lou thought otherwise.
As for Keith Jackson, he bought into the idea from a great recruiter, Barry Switzer, that he could become an All-American tight end at OU. Holtz, before he left, was even proposing to recruit Jackson as an I-back. Hatfield took over but by then it was too late to sway KJ's man-crush on Barry Switzer and on OU. Of course, there were some other inducements.
Oklahoma also had an "in" in the Pine Bluff area at one time, one on the coaching staff there and one in the medical field, that really helped the Sooners recruit central and southeast Arkansas. It should have been stopped by the NCAA but it wasn't, and it probably goes on even today in some places, such as "handlers" trying to direct certain recruiits to schools out of state. For a while Arkansas was losing some of its best players to Tennessee. Lately, Auburn seems to have entered the picture.
If you've been to Auburn, or to Morgantown, WVa, or to College Station, or to Oxford, or Starkville, or wherever, I don't think the location is a negative for Arkansas.

I still think he would have been better off there than OU for his four-year career, but he eventually grew into a good wishbone QB for OU by 1983-84.

All I remember is this....we stunk up the field against Alabama. We had a bye week and came back and completely dominated Auburn. So, whoever took over during that bye week, in my opinion, saved the season. I don't know and I doubt anyone on here does either. But, it's only logical to say that if it was Gus, then Houston must not be guilty of interfering. If it was Houston, I'm sure glad he did! Because they sure got better. Ar has plenty to offer student athletes but the right coaches with the philosophy the skill position kids like is essential. I'm not trying to knock Casey Dick but a prime example. With Nutt's run philosophy you are not going to get a 4 star qb that likes to throw to come here. Even with the great backs we had you have to be able to pass a little bit. We may not be able to get there but I'm willing to give it a try.

As for Houston, so long as he (1) doesn't beat the Hogs again on the field; (2) doesn't beat us for any recruits; and (3) doesn't finish ahead of us in the West, what do I care if he is a rip-roaring success (or abject failure) at Ole Miss? It's no skin off my nose if the Rebs hail him as the greatest coach in school history and build him a shrine in the Grove -- so long as those 3 conditions are met . (Yeah, I think he could be the greatest coach in school history and never beat the Hogs or win the West, but again what's it to me whether he does that or gets fired tomorrow? Nothing.)

Seems to me those who wanted Nutt gone will be vindicated by the great job that Petrino will do -- not by waiting and hoping for Nutt to fail. Its not even the 2nd largest city in Texas! On top of that , Ok. has their own state (3.5 million in population) plus practically all of the midwest. Texas and OU just reload ever year. Metro Dallas is twice the population of the entire state of Arkansas.

Petrino got a team with no experience and very little talent. You pick and choose the facts but fail to explain the circumstances. One reason of the reasons HDN left that you failed to mention was because he knew the talent was depleted because he was not an effective recruiter.

Not off hand. I know they went to the Orange Bowl and beat a good team. But look what happened to them after he left, pitiful.And they were good the whole time he was there. That's why I have my hopes up, like the rest of the state.

Bruce, I should have known better with you. As of today Ark. has played 5 ranked opponents on the day that we played them, and if schedule holds to form, he will play 2 more. (SC and LSU). Therefore, just this year he will play as many ranked opponents as he did in 4 years in Louisville.

The only thing I was pissed at in the Capital One Bowl were the refs (though I did think it very odd that in one of the biggest games of the year Nutty was taking time out to text a female who was not his wife right before the game...?). Oh, and Wisconsin's coach, Butthead Bielema, but that goes back to the years I spent in lovely Wisconsin before I moved to lovely Georgia and has nothing to do with this conversation. (Who brought up the 'Wisconsin Game' anyway?)

I think BP has the offense on the right track but at the rate the defense is going it may take 4,5,years or even longer for the defense to come around. I am a BP fan and I am going to be patient, I truly believe he can take us to the next level but 1st he has to somehow fix this pitiful defense.

I'm a bit perplexed by our D as well. I want to see how the team progresses over the rest of our schedule before I make a final assessment. While they have shown capacity to screw up royally, there have also been flashes of brilliance (given that this team isn't going to shut anyone out, anytime, well...maybe EM with all the starters in the whole game). It may be a combination of lack of talent (I find it hard to believe that Matt Harris is our best option at S much as I like the kid) and inexperience (really surprised that Leon has taken so long to come around...guess that's the SEC for you) making for a real spotty performance.

I don't want to run Willie off just yet; starting over would just be counter-productive and set us back even farther. I believe he's on the right track with the D but I'd sure feel a whole lot better with a strong sustained effort over the rest of the schedule.

In the post intergration period, we always played second Fiddle to Texas, and in the SEC will have always on a national scale been behind Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, LSU, Auburn. Been equal to South Carolina and Kentucky,Been slightly better than Ole Miss, MSU and Vandy in the pecking order.Some of the pecking order might be debatable. the point is, we are in mid to lower pecking order, hence bottom-feeders. We are what we are. PROVE ME WRONG WITH STATS, WINS-LOSSES,STANDING, RANKINGS. Why is it considered disloyal to take an honest assessment of where the Arkansas Razorbacks historically stand?

I really think Petrino will be able to recruit skill position players and Ar has always managed to have a good offensive line but your Nutty Buddy really didn't leave Petirno much to work with on the defensive side of the ball. If we can manage to get our defense as good,as say Ms.States, and there's no reason we shouldn't be able to do that, Ar should win at least 9 games a year. But first and foremost that defense has to be addressed.

Arkansas was ranked in the final poll eight years in the '60s; six years in the '70's; and six years in the '80's. We were ranked twice in the '90's: '98 and '99, the two years Nutty had Ford's boys. Finally we've been ranked once in the '00s: 2006 when Nutty managed the best ranking he would have at Arkansas, 16th (and this with perhaps the best overall backfield Arkansas ever had...woohoo! Now I'm beginning to see where you get your taste for low expectations.)

Another way of putting that (a more honest way, I might add...) is during Arkansas' time in the SWC (76 years), the Hogs only had a losing record in football against one team, Texass.

Every team on your list has had its ups and downs. Florida has only been a power since '91. Before that they sucked and they will again. FSU has been a power since really '87 and now they suck again, finally. Some of those teams have only recently sucked or started to suck (Alabubba, anyone? Georgia? Auburn? Tennessee? LSU? Miami? Oklahoma? Nebraska?) To keep insisting that Arkansas will always be a 'bottom feeder' denies the lessons of history; namely, if you don't want to be a bottom feeder, you don't have to be one. You can improve. You can recapture past glories or create new glory. It happens and it will happen again for Arkansas and soon.

Oh, btw, according to Billingslys All-Time Top Program Rankings (1869-2008), Arkansas is ranked 22nd. How's that for being honest about where the Hogs 'historically stand'? Not too shabby for a 'bottom feeder', huh? Should only get better with Petrino at the helm. Ole Piss ranks 32nd on the list. Too bad for them: doesn't look like they'll be catching up anytime soon with Nutty in charge. But you go on over there; I'm sure they'll make a prominent space for you in the rebel fan club specially since you're such a fan of the coach an all.

With the scholarship limits,if you falter either by poor recruiting or recruits that just don't pan out, it can put your program in serious trouble. Sometimes coaches that have been at a univ. too long tend to rest on their laurels and don't tend to recruit as hard. I believe that's what happened to BB at Fl. St. I love BB, really have a lot of respect for the man but he thought the institution that he built would recruit by itself. ND is another example, you could tell a recruit if he was half-way worth a flip he had a good chance to win the Heisman trophy. Until scholarship limits ND's name recruited for itself but not anymore.

In a game with Wisconsin that OSU would go on to lose, Hawk tackled the Wisconsin QB and, while the play continued on down field, proceeded to choke him so severely he had to leave the game and not return. Hawk received a two game suspension, if memory serves. I thought that was too light at the time.

When intergration can into play in the late 60s and early 70s we did decline slightly. You noted that we were ranked 6 times in the 70s in the final polls and 6 times in the 80s final polls. That can be summed up in two words SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE. We were in a conference that allowed us to compete and beat just about everybody we played. Im guessing we averaged 8 or 9 wins a year. Its telling that in the 90s, we were only ranked twice. We joined the SEC in 92. Its admirable that we are in the overall toughest conference in the country, but make no doubt about it, it has come at a HEAVY COST. We have completely lost a state with 25 million people in it (Texas) which historically was a fabulous recruiting area for us. We also get little to no attention outside the state.
