Nutt and Malzahn are a hot topic again this week with Ole Miss and Auburn playing on Saturday. Neither man is saying much about the other, but what they're not saying is pretty telling.
Even more telling is the fact both admitted they haven't talked since Malzahn, who Nutt hired from nearby Springdale High, left Arkansas following the Razorbacks' 10-win season in 2006.
Nutt was out of a job a year later and according to ESPN's Chris Low, "it's no secret that Nutt believes the whole Malzahn/Springdale connection played a big role in how badly things deteriorated for him at Arkansas."
This summer, when asked if he would have done anything differently at Arkansas if he had it to do over again, Nutt said pointedly, "I probably wouldn't have hired a couple of people. I probably would have just stuck to my niche."
Andy Bitter of The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer has even more on the relationship or lack of one.
"I hadn't gotten a chance to visit with him since then," Malzahn said diplomatically, "but he gave me an opportunity to get in the college game ... and ... you know ..."
He trailed off nervously, turning his head and hoping for a different line of questioning. It's clearly still a touchy subject.
Ole Miss and Auburn play at 11:21 on Saturday.
