I'm pretty sure those #'s don't represent yds because those 2 numbers when combined fall well below the 407.22 yds we've been allowing per game.  

My question is about the turnover margin. I thought we were like +9 or so....what is this 1.0? is that per game I would guess?

I'm taking nothing from Smith, he is talented, but I believe that Dennis Johnson could carry this team in the same manner that Darren McFadden did. Actually The both of them could be the top RB tandem in the country. It is sad that Johnson's is disappearing in the back field. When healthy Dennis Johnson and Michael Smith should be on the field running the ball.

Ole Miss has been the opposite -- the least dominant of its state's 3 Division I teams. Tennessee does not have a wealith of talent at its disposal, as its "base" as you call it. Being six hours from Memphis and the western part of Tennessee does not serve UT as an advantage either, as UT has to recruit against Bama, Ole Miss and even Arkasnas at times for that area. UT has to go well outside its "base" to get competitive talent, including raiding Georgia. That also probalby explains why UT has the largest recruiting budget of anyone in the SEC, because the school knows it must invest in more recruiting than, say, Florida, LSU or Alabama. Hence, Tennessee has been able in its heyday to go into Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama (including Bama-flavored Mobile), Arkansas, North Carolina, Florida and Georgia, and as far as the West Coast even, to get talent. None of that is out of Arkansas' reach either, if the effort is put into recruiting that hard. At Arkansas' disposal more so than Tennessee's is talent out of Texas and Oklahoma, as well as picking up a four-star here and there out of Missouri, as Arkansas did in its hey day, and it doesn't matter what conference is involved. In fact, the draw of the SEC should make Arkansas more attractive to big-time recruits than wallowing in mediocrity of the midland's Big 12.

Identities such as "fun and gun" at Florida, "Tailback U," once upon a time at USC, "Blackshirts" for the once-proud Nebraska D; "Forty Minutes of Hell" for UA basketball; "Phi Slamma Jamma" long ago at UH helped those schools (some of which didn't need help) in recruiting.

I think Petrino (but not Jim Grobe, Tommy Tuberville, Tommy Bowden or others once eyed as replacements for Nutt) has a *chance* to give UA an "edge" -- an identity for its exciting pro-style passing attack. (For instance, I don't know if Brandon Mitchell will ever play a down at QB for the Hogs, but I know the redshirting freshman was quoted as saying he chose UA because Petrino and QB Coach Garrick McGee could help him realize his dream of becoming an NFL quarterback. Now, of course, all college QBs may have that dream, but I don't recall reading where a QB says "Coach Mullen, or Coach Miles, or even Coach Saban, can help me get to the next level").

So, froghog my friend, I'm not just for Petrino because he's the Kool-aid flavor of the day at UA. I'm hoping that, in time, he can give UA the "edge" that will not only draw offensive skill players, but more televised games, more fans, increased respect, greater attention -- and the defensive players and linemen that follow those things.

The alternative to saying "We're disadvantaged but here's a way we might be able to compete with the top echelon SEC teams" is to say. . .

Auburn now has verbal commitments from three 5 star running backs. Dyer, Seastrunk, and now Reed from Thibodeaux La. Something is beginning to stink in Al. That has never been done before.

Here's the difference between you and I: We *both* agree that fans asked Houston to take the school places it had never (or seldom) been; they acted as if Nutt took a top 10 program and turned it mediocre. Just happens that *I* think Petrino can take the school places it has never been (where HDN failed). You (if I understand correctly) don't think Petrino can do any better than Nutt, in the long run.

If you took population centers within a 3 hour drive of Knoxville, you would find Metro Atlanta(214 miles from Knoxville while Fayetteville is 225 miles from Little Rock) at 5,376,000, Metro Nashville at 1,550,000 and Metro Knoxville at 691,000 (Metro Little Rock is 675,000) Just calculating those 3 Metro areas gives UT a population base of over 7.5 million compared to the entire state of Arkansas at 2.8 million. And I'm not even counting the other millions in eastern and central Tennessee, north Georgia, the Carolinas and Memphis, which last time I checked was in TENNESSEE! Just in those 3 areas alone, within an easy drive to Knoxville, they have over 2.5 times the population we have in the entire state and I can tell you its alot farther to Fayetteville than 3 hours from south, southeast,and eastern Arkansas.DAMN THE PEOPLE THAT DECIDED TO PUT THE STATE UNIVERSITY IN A REMOTE PART OF THE STATE!!!

If they had Arkansas schedule that year, they never would have even been ranked. They finished 17th in USA and 19th in AP. HISTORY will always record their achievement, yet in our conference, they would have been nothing, which is where the HOGS finished. If your proud of that, SO BE IT! If being nothing in the best conference turns you on, GO FOR IT!

The recruiting services are only allowed so many 5 and 4 stars to give out so the difference between a 3 or 4 star may not be that big of a difference in talent! Look at your favorite players and go back and see what they were ranked coming out of high school! I will be you will be surprised at how low they were ranked but are All American now! What about the NFL players who come from small schools, they were not 5 star players but look at where they are now!!!!!!! We can recruit with anyone with BP at the helm and he will have us in a BCS bowl next year and in position to win the NC soon!!! Seven you are a little lost dude, this may not be the best place for you to comment unless you like being called stupid! There is no way we will run to the Big 12 because we would do better there! First off, for accuracy, I don't know which out of the way direction you drive from Fayetteville to LR, but it's 192 miles every time I make the drive on 40 and 540.

So, you are positing an argument basing Atlanta and all these regional areas for Tennessee, but then for Arkansas you are only focusing on the state or Arkansas? What a crock of bad taco meat.
What about Tulsa's metro area, within an hour and a half of Fayetteville? What about St. Louis within six hours, or Dallas-Fort Worth within six hours, the same amount of time as it takes to drive from Memphis to Tennessee, and just slightly more than those population centers in NC that Tennessee tires to mine? Or Florida, where Tennessee mines.
What about the Oklahoma City metro, which I would guesstimate is well over 1 million in pop? Kansas City metro? Memphis is a closer drive to Fayetteville than to Knoxville.
Once again, as Bobby Petrino continues to win, recruits from the region (within this regional base) will buy in in big numbers, and then players beyond that reach will. With 25 scholarships maximum per signing class, and with a solid program under Petrino with a hard-working recruiting staff (unlike Nutt), you will see the talent level continue to rise.  

Editor- Seems BP can recruit fine offensively, but what about defensively. Looking at the verb commitment list it just isn't very impressive. I know it's early but we just don't seem to be able to get the defensive studs.

Even though you can practically see the states of Missouri and Oklahoma from the top of Reynolds Razorback stadium, they might as well be on the other side of the world.We get so very few good football players from these states. I just looked at Hawgsillustrated and you will be surprised at the players making some noise now were rated two and three star players! Just because someone thinks they are three star players does not mean they are not good players, they only have so many five and four stars to give so being a three star does not mean you don't have a good ball player! I trust this coach and his evaluation of players! Zach Stadther was a two star player out of high school and he started as a freshman and he is doing good!! The list goes on and on! We have beaten LSU two years in a row but the recruiting classes they have over us says we should not even be in the game but we win!!! We never had the classes Texas has but look at our record against them in the last 5 meetings! We beat them with HDN so wait until BP has been here for 4 to 5 years and see who the better team is and not who has the better recruiting class! Too much goes into a recruiting class and football goes way beyond that!!!! You don't know football like BP so you have to trust HIM not the services!!!!!!

DD- THE FACTS. History will record LSU as 2007 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS and the Arkansas Razorbacks as UNRANKED mid-feeders. But by god, we are in the best conference in the country. DD- can you start naming for me the great players from Texas that have contributed to Arkansas football in the last 17 years. I know there are some. You say, the number of stars dont matter. There are always a few players that over achieve, that is true. Question, Why do the best teams year in and year out (there are always exceptions) always seem to get the best HS athletes? Im willing to bet 5 years from now, the usual suspects Florida, Alabama, USC, Ohio St., LSU, Texas, Oklahoma will once again get all of the top-rated recruits. Does it mean they will win? NO, but Ill take their position over ours ANYDAY OF THE WEEK.

You're right those stars don't mean everything but like FH said it is a good measuring stick. Right now we are only 3 good players away on D to be really making waves in the SEC. FH, nobody expected us to do any better than 6-6 this yr and realistically we have a chance to be 8-4. Didn't say we would be 8-4 just saying it is a realistic possibility.

Not ranked that year but I didn't say we were (however, had nutty stuck around and not run off, perhaps he could have coaxed one more unlikely, out-of-this-world win from the boys at the Cotton and that would have gotten us ranked. We were that close even with nutty's poor coaching. But he did run off; guess he didn't love that helmet too much after all...).

I've already addressed this in other threads and, unlike you, grow tired of repeating myself. Reference those posts for your answer.

Here you put your focus on the wrong aspect of your 'fact': the program wasn't the reason for the relative lack of success during nutty's tenure. Nutty simply can't do any better than that. He wouldn't be able to do better if he were at Bama, OU, Texass, or USC; it simply wouldn't matter. He'd rapidly run the program down to his level. Watch what happens at ol piss.

Wrong. During the 60's we were a heavyweight, grabbing one NC and having shots at three others. It does depend on your definition of 'heavyweight' (and I'm sure you'll try to slant it to favor your position) but I'd argue we were heavyweights to a large degree in the 70's and 80's as well.

You're attempting to prove your case from history, which isn't normally a bad way to go about it but your case relies on things always remaining the same. Arkansas has struggled since coming the SEC so they will always struggle, until they leave the SEC for your version of greener pastures. Nutty couldn't consistently recruit for Arkansas so no one will be able to until those greener pastures...you know the rest.

Unfortunately for your case, nothing remains the same. Petrino is a much better coach (especially in building and running a program) than almost any coach the Hogs have had. Broyles would really be the only competition he'd have in this area. Certainly not nutty. Nutty can't even maintain a good position when it's given to him, much less improve upon it. If you question this, just ask yourself what Petrino would have been able to accomplish with nutty's team and ranking at the start of this season, with that team having had a year in his system, plus having the soft schedule ol nutty has had. And be honest in your assessment. Likewise, because Petrino knows how to successfully run a program, our recruiting will continue to blossom under his guidance.

If Mallett stays (and the D continues to improve), we will be in BCS bowls for his last two years. That should be 'heavyweight' enough for you, at least to start (I know, Bruce, I know, but one can always hope ;^).

It's better than a 'realistic possibility'. Both LSU and Miss St. are struggling on offense. Neither team has anything special at QB (kinda surprised on that for LSU; I thought Jefferson would pan out better...). Both are one dimensional, relying mainly on a running attack (sound familiar?). Our D does a pretty good job of defensing the run, especially when there's little threat of a passing attack.

I don't believe either opposing defense will be able to consistently stop our offense (I like the Tiger's chances here better than Miss St's). We will be able to put up numbers our opposition will be hard-pressed to match. At the beginning of the year I thought 8-5 was best case. Now I'm willing to go out on a limb and say 9-4. Should this actually come to pass the paradigm will have definitely shifted (and FHP can go find a suitable team in the B12 to root for).  

Alabama is a prime example. Look how the program fell back with Shula and his predecessors, now that they have a real coach they are on top of the world, at least for the time being.

And it's not a blind squirrel finding an acorn when you beat Oklahoma, Texas Tech, LSU, Michigan, Oklahoma State and Miami for David Gordon; beat Oklahoma, Alabama, Illinois, Minnesota, Kansas, Tennessee and Missouri for Ronnie Wingo; beat Michigan, Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Oklahoma State for D.D. Jones and beat Auburn, Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Texas and TCU for Cobi Hamilton. (Those are "also recruited by" schools reported by the UA website; I'm not claiming all involved scholarship offers, but we know some did.)

Sure, we'll need a lot more where those came from, but it's really not fair to call these recruits from neighboring states "flukes."

How about we wait a couple of years before we run up the white flag?
