The Bobby Petrino hire continues to reverberate, and here's a round-up of what folks are saying about his move back to the college ranks:
It's a homerun for Arkansas: "That's genius ... Wow... just, wow. Arkansas is set. That's a fantastic hire." [Fanhouse @ AOL]
Petrino was a bad fit for the NFL from the git-go: "Like Steve Spurrier and Nick Saban before him, Petrino is just the latest big-name ex-collegiate head coach to jump to the NFL for the big money, and then make the quick discovery that they can't win as much in the NFL, they can't construct their usual little fiefdom in the NFL, and they sure can't exert the same total control over their players or their program in the NFL as they could back in their college coaching days." [Don Banks, SI.com]
He couldn't help but hit the road: "He is a coaching nomad who stays no longer than he sees fit, just long enough for a siren's song to stir up the itch to exit and the need to try on another challenge. On the Petrino speed-dial list must be the phone number of a friend with a moving van." [Len Pasquarelli, ESPN]
He was never up to the Atlanta job anyway: "Bobby Petrino quit because being an NFL coach isn’t just about Xs and Os. It’s about all of those things Petrino didn’t want to handle and clearly wasn’t equipped to handle. Salary cap issues. Players egos. The most basic form of communication. Bobby Petrino quit because he couldn’t handle almost anything. Michael Vick lied to Arthur Blank. Bobby Petrino lied to Arthur Blank. The second guy didn’t break any laws, but the two are closer than we could have imagined in the character department. Petrino is a quitter." [Jeff Schultz, AJC.com]
He had doubts about the Falcons roster: "Petrino did what he always does: He protected himself and his career. However, if Houston Nutt couldn't please the Arkansas faithful — and John Tyson in particular — Petrino's new job doesn't look much easier." [John Czarnecki, Fox Sports]
The allure of the SEC -- not neccessarily Arkansas -- got him: "In the SEC, the boosters’ pockets are deep, the check books wide open, the talent plentiful. Games are all over the television and the throngs of fans will crown you king … with a few wins." [MSNBC]
He's a 'disingenuous drifter': "He'll look at them with blank shark eyes and tell them, in a monotone voice, how excited he is to be the coach of the Razorbacks. He will tell them how impressed he is by the tradition and the fan base. He will tell them that the Southeastern Conference is the place he always wanted to coach (and that might be the one true thing he'll say, given how many times he's tried to land a job in the league). It will be a trumped-up stump speech, as sincere as a politician's pledge to cut taxes. It will simply be the latest pack of lies in a career full of them. But it will be what Arkansas fans want to hear, and the poor saps will be desperate to believe him." [Pat Forde, ESPN]
