Pelphrey Speaks On Beverley, Britt, Scheduling And More
Posted at 12:36:29 PM by Chris Bahn
Former Arkansas guard Patrick Beverley alleged he was dismissed from the team for NCAA violations. He later claimed to be the fall guy for widespread cheating among basketball players. Beverley then backed off those statements.

How does Razorbacks coach John Pelphrey feel now about Beverley, a hard-working and gifted player with a knack for running his mouth?

They haven't talked recently, but Pelphrey said he still has a relationship with Beverley, who played overseas instead of finishing his final two years at Arkansas. Beverley is believed to have committed some degree of academic fraud while enrolled in Fayetteville.

"We have one. We have a relationship," Pelphrey said. "I'll always try to encourage Patrick and the rest of those guys to do the right things. ..."

NO STAFF CHANGES
Coaching turnover is not uncommon on teams that struggle.

Arkansas finished 14-16 and was 2-14 in the SEC, so it stood to reason Pelphrey would consider changing up his staff. He isn't.

Pelphrey indicated there would be no staff changes and no shuffling of duties among a staff of assistants that includes Rob Evans, Tom Ostrom and Isaac Brown.

"I'm not making any excuses. This is the same group of guys that got bonuses for going to the NCAA Tournament the year before. All of a sudden they don't know what they're doing?'

Arkansas was 23-11 in Pelphrey's first season. The Razorbacks advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

SCHEDULING
Arkansas and Louisville is going to happen early in the basketball season.

Pelphrey had previously hinted the game was a possibility, but wouldn't say much because the contract wasn't signed. Pelphrey said the contract is still being worked out.

"That's happening," Pelphrey said.

Arkansas also has games on the schedule with Texas and Baylor (in Little Rock) and at Oklahoma. There is still a date to fill in early January. Pelphrey said there were some preferred criteria for an opponent, but didn't talk specifically about what those would be.

HENRY WATCH
Freshman Jason Henry was a source of great frustration for coaches in 2008-09.

Henry showed great athleticism and the ability to play four positions on the court. His versatility was often overshadowed by his attitude and off-court problems.

Pelphrey often described Henry's status with the team as "day-to-day."

Not much has changed.

Henry did have a strong spring in the classroom, but still has academic work to do this summer.

"I would say Jason is still day-to-day. It's no different than you've heard," Pelphrey said.  "He had a very good spring academically. That needs to continue here in the summer. Hopefully (the spring) encourages him."

BRITT STILL ON TEAM
Marcus Britt is suspended indefinitely pending his DWI arrest earlier this month, but still has access to Bud Walton Arena and his status with the Razorbacks is not in jeopardy.

Britt is back in Fayetteville for the first session of summer school. He "loves the state and feels bad about letting the University of Arkansas and his team down," Pelphrey said.

There has been some discipline handed down to Britt. Additional punishment will follow, Pelphrey said.
