ArcBest Corp. Reports 48 Percent Income Drop for 2Q

ArcBest Corp. of Fort Smith reported second-quarter income of $10.2 million Friday, a drop from the $19.9 million it reported in the same quarter of 2015. The company said an "inconsistent economic operating environment" and a surplus of capacity affected all divisions during the quarter.

ABF Freight Remains Unmoved in Relocation

Last summer, ABF Freight, a subsidiary of ArcBest Corp. of Fort Smith, received a $4 million grant from a Memphis-area economic development group to relocate in Memphis. ArcBest, through affiliate Transport Realty Inc., bought two properties totaling 13.55 acres at the proposed relocation site for about $600,000 in 2014.

Roy Slagle retired as CEO and president of ABF Freight System Inc. on Wednesday after 37 years. ABF Freight is the largest subsidiary of ArcBest Corp. of Fort Smith. ArcBest announced Thursday that Tim Thorne would replace Slagle as ABF Freight president.

Trucking Firms Raise Pay To Keep Moving

Listen to any Arkansas trucking company executive — with the possible exception of unionized ABF Freight — and you will hear lamentations about driver shortages in the industry. Short of cultural change to repopularize the job, executives know they have to pay more to attract drivers and work harder to keep them. The trend doesn’t look like it is going to get any better anytime soon.

For the Teamsters and for North Little Rock, there is no bright side To ABF Frieght considering a move to Memphis. For the state of Arkansas, the only hope is to persuade ABF that the west side of the intersection between I-40 and the Mississippi River would be as good as the east side.

Tim Nichols, the head of Local 878, has 3,000 union members who work for 18 companies throughout the state. ArcBest Corp. of Fort Smith is leaning toward moving ABF Freight, its largest subsidiary, to Memphis, which would result in a major reduction of its operations in North Little Rock.
