Gus Malzahn doesn’t mind playing a freshman if he thinks the player can contribute. That’s why he hasn’t been shy about working young players into the mix during the non-conference portion of the schedule. And the youth movement has produced for Malzahn and the Red Wolves (2-2), especially on offense. From center Bryce Giddens to wide receiver J.D. McKissic and running backs Michael Gordon and Rocky Hayes and other first-year guys the contributions have been plentiful.

Mike Anderson and the basketball program love to take advantage of a big football weekend to host recruits. Anderson will host a pair of top recruits beginning Sept. 14. Little Rock Hall 5-star power forward Bobby Portis (6-foot-9, 225 pounds) and Huntington (W.Va.) Prep 4-star center Moses Kingsley (6-9, 200) will be on Arkansas' campus and attend the football game in addition to the basketball and academic aspects of the visit.

Malzahn, not surprisingly, is focused more on his Arkansas State team than himself. He envisions turning the Red Wolves into a Top 25 program and how far into the process he is after a little more than eight months on the job will become clearer on ESPN Saturday at 9:30 p.m. CDT.

Arkansas State opens at No. 5 Oregon on Saturday and plays at No. 17 Nebraska on Sept. 15. Each game will offer paydays in the neighborhood of $1 million, money that will help fund the Red Wolves’ athletic department. While the payouts are nice, Malzahn said he plans to be more “strategic” with scheduling in the future. Games with big-name opponents are fine, but loading up on road games at elite schools isn’t something he prefers.

Wide receiver Earl Lucas has been dismissed from the Arkansas State football team. Red Wolves Coach Gus Malzahn announced the dismissal Sunday. Lucas was kicked off the team less than 48 hours after Malzahn suspended defensive back Tres Houston for the season.
