University of Arkansas Athletics Claims Big Effect on Economy

The University of Arkansas has released its annual report for athletic programs. In it, the Razorbacks sports teams say they had an economic impact of $153.6 million during the 2012-13 school year.

Each had his own approach, but all of the administrators — Arizona’s Greg Byrne, Illinois’ Mike Thomas, North Carolina’s Bubba Cunningham and Washington State’s Bill Moos — agreed that a football coaching search is as consuming as it gets. There is no overstating the importance of the decision currently facing Arkansas Athletic Director Jeff Long.

Former Arkansas linebacker Bret Harris has been arrested and charged with felony terroristic threatening. Harris, 23, was arrested Tuesday by University of Arkansas police after posting messages on Twitter believed to be a threat to kill Razorback athletic trainer Matt Summers.

Razorbacks Not Facing Penalty For Low Men's Basketball Score, Hit APR Marks In 18 Sports

Arkansas basketball is again under the NCAA-mandated benchmark for Academic Progress Rate scores, but will not be penalized. Athletic department officials said even in posting a four-year rate of 894 the school showed sufficient progress toward improving its APR score and will avoid penalty for a second year in a row. Arkansas was docked a scholarship in 2011-12 for failing to meet the 925 standard.

Mitch Mustain’s professional baseball debut is in the books. Mustain pitched two innings in relief for the Bristol (Va.) White Sox in the Rookie Appalachian League. He gave up two hits and struck out two and has a 0.00 earned run average. It was a solid outing, especially considering he hasn’t pitched in a game since his sophomore season of high school.

Arkansas picked up commitment No. 7 last week, Edmond (Okla.) Santa Fe defensive back Khari Harding. Harding, who ranks No. 6 among The Oklahoman’s Top 30 in-state prospects, had offers from Arkansas State, Colorado State, Houston, Kansas State, Memphis and Indiana.

Wright arrived on campus as a linebacker, but was switched to defensive end after coaches preferred what they saw from him there during his redshirt season. But Wright impressed coaches with his work at linebacker Thursday. He made the move for portions of practice because middle linebacker Alonzo Highsmith is out for the spring with a pectoral tear.
