Contract negotiations between John L. Smith and the University of Arkansas were consistent with the handling of other coaching contracts, an athletic department spokesman said Monday.

USA Today reports that Razorbacks football coach John L. Smith has deferred 71 percent of his total pay, which could raise legal questions in his $40.7 million bankruptcy.

Remember the $70,000 Razorbacks basketball listed on eBay earlier this summer? It's still there, and now it's joined by another, this one priced $20,000 below the first.

Losing to a team like Louisiana-Monroe comes with a cost. Arkansas' hope here is that the losses are limited to dropping out of the AP Top 25 poll and failing to reap the benefits of the marketing value that comes with college football's most popular pregame show.

The Southeastern Conference is looking out for No. 1. Maybe even No. 2. Football coaches from the powerhouse and recently expanded league were in unison Tuesday that they want a proposed four-team playoff to include the best teams in the country - and not be tied to conference champions.

Perhaps Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson can't do his relationship with offensive coordinator Paul Petrino justice with words. His spring practice performance provides as good an explanation as any of how well he and Petrino fit. It's well documented the sort of spring Wilson had. He threw no interceptions in scrimmages and capped April by completing 31 of 41 passes for 467 yards with two touchdowns in the Red-White game.

So far six Arkansas football players have been arrested this spring, including five allegedly involved in taking property that isn't theirs. They have nobody to blame but themselves. Bobby Petrino, John L. Smith and the NCAA aren't at fault for their stupidity.

Don't bother looking for a Wal-Mart in the south Arkansas town of Warren. To find one of those you have to drive 20 or so miles east to Monticello. Same thing with a local movie theater. Warren doesn't have one of those either. Know what the South Arkansas town of 6,000 does have? A history of producing great college wide receivers and two of the top 150 draft picks in the recent NFL Draft. Former Arkansas Razorbacks and Warren teammates Jarius Wright and Greg Childs were fourth-round picks by the Minnesota Vikings, further establishing Warren's tradition as a hotbed for wide receiver talent in Arkansas.

Former Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino and Jessica Dorrell exchanged thousands of phone calls, text and multimedia messages between September and April 5, including on game days during the 2011 football season. Documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request provided more detail of the inappropriate relationship between the two that ultimately led to Petrino's firing. Athletic Director Jeff Long said Petrino and Dorrell, hired into the football office on March 28, were together a “significant” amount of time, something the records confirm.

Regardless of how much pain he was in following the wreck — State Police Captain Lance King says Petrino did nothing but groan on the way to the hospital (well, groan and provide detailed directions on how to get to the little known Physician's Specialty Hospital)— it's really hard to muster much sympathy anymore for Petrino. But there are folks that deserve your empathy. None of them are wearing neck braces. All of them have been hurt in ways that aren't as visible as the road rash on Petrino's face.

There is a next logical step in showing respect to Nolan Richardson. Former players have already begun work behind the scenes to ensure appreciation for Richardson isn't limited to a museum, the pages of a book, the occasional pep rally celebrating the 1994 National Championship or a documentary. Arkansas needs a more permanent reminder of what he accomplished as a coach, what a great ambassador he was for the state and how hard he fought for others.

Arkansas running back Knile Davis will stay with the Razorbacks for another year and forgo any NFL Draft possibility until at least 2013, saying in a release that he is "determined to help this program accomplish the goals we have set in place."

Gus Malzahn to Arkansas State is happening. Malzahn, the Auburn offensive coordinator, will be named the Red Wolves head coach at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. A press conference is set for the ASU Convocation Center. Before the official announcement, the move already has garnered regional and national media reaction. Below we offer a Speaking Out roundup of reaction to Malzahn's move:

Shortly after arriving in Fayetteville on Sunday, new Arkansas defensive coordinator Paul Haynes began familiarizing himself with the unit he would be taking over. Haynes watched film until about 1 a.m. with a graduate assistant, taking notes on plays and personnel. That willingness to jump right into the task at hand is a pretty telling glimpse of what attracted Bobby Petrino to Haynes, a six-year assistant at Ohio State. Petrino calls it “grinding.”

Arkansas will be without the services of junior forward Marshawn Powell this season. He's out 6-8 months with torn knee ligaments.

Watching Mississippi State running back Vick Ballard on film, Tramain Thomas is struck by how the running back only seems to get better the longer a game goes. Ballard has 811 rushing yards for the Bulldogs thanks to a running style that's as physical at the end as the start.

One of the byproducts of Arkansas' offensive system is the way it showcases different players from week-to-week. Any wide receiver is capable of a big game and often the go-to for the Razorbacks changes by game. There might be no better example than the fact Joe Adams and Jarius Wright are each closing in on the career receptions record for the Razorbacks. Adams ranks No. 3 on the career receptions list at Arkansas with 151. Wright is right behind him at 150.

Greg Childs has seen a decline in his production this season at wide receiver. His attitude and blocking haven't suffered, however. Currently he has just nine catches for 109 yards. Offensive coordinator Garrick McGee praised Childs for contributions in other areas and said the decline could be attributed to “coverages” teams are using against the Razorbacks.

Arkansas enjoyed a total team victory on Saturday. No doubt. The defense forced three turnovers and outside of two big plays and a couple of first-quarter touchdowns, held strong. Special teams chipped in as well, but it was that quick-strike run from Joe Adams lined up at tailback with 7:43 left in the third quarter that left no doubt the 74,191 fans on hand were watching an Arkansas victory.
