The inevitable question arose for new Ole Miss Coach Hugh Freeze on Thursday at SEC Media Days: How would you compare the talent you had at Arkansas State last year to the talent at Ole Miss this year? Freeze did a little dance around the question. "I don't know if that's a fair judge necessarily, because the year we had last year at Arkansas State was a remarkable ride," Freeze said.

Brandon Joiner’s pro football career will have to wait. Joiner, the former Arkansas State defensive end and recent free agent signee of the Cincinnati Bengals, was sentenced to three years in prison for his role in a 2007 robbery. Joiner was a Texas A&M player at the time when he was charged with aggravated robbery at a College Station, Texas apartment complex.

NFL scouts have found players worth drafting at Arkansas State each of the last five years. Judging from the turnout at the Red Wolves’ pro day, it won’t be a shock to see that streak stretch to a sixth NFL Draft.

Arkansas State defensive coordinator John Thompson likes what he’s seen from his defensive players so far. Through two spring practices he’s seen the desired effort. Thompson likes the tempo the defensive players have brought to the field. But Wednesday, when the Red Wolves put on pads for the first time this spring, is when Thompson can truly begin evaluating what he has. Only then will Thompson be able to tell, as he puts it, who can really “bite.”

South Stumbles on Offense, North Pulls Away for 24-19 All-Star Classic Win

The South All-Stars, which included 13 Southeastern Conference players and a dozen competitors from Arkansas colleges, seemed comfortably in control early, but long drives began bogging down into field goal tries, and the North capitalized to take a 24-19 win in the first Players All-Star Classic at War Memorial Stadium.

Twelve Arkansas college seniors, including University of Central Arkansas quarterback Nathan Dick and Arkansas Razorback defensive standouts Tramain Thomas and Jerico Nelson, are part of the South roster in the first Players All-Star Classic, scheduled for War Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 4. Officials for the game released the list of 106 participants on Monday. The players will arrive next Monday and begin workouts in front of NFL and other professional league scouts in preparation for the all-star game, which kicks off Feb. 4 at 3 p.m.

Red Wolves' Aplin, Freeze, Joiner Earn Top Recognition From Sun Belt Conference

Arkansas State is reaping more rewards for its 10-2 season and Sun Belt Conference title. Quarterback Ryan Aplin was named the league’s Player of the Year. Defensive lineman Brandon Joiner was picked as SBC Defensive Player of the Year. Coach Hugh Freeze, hired at Ole Miss on Monday, was picked as the conference’s top coach and seven Red Wolves were named to the first-team all-Sun Belt offense or defense as ASU became the first team in league history to win 10 games in the regular season.

Brandon Joiner has been an impact player for the Arkansas State defense all season. It continued Saturday in their biggest game of the year. Joiner tied a school and Sun Belt Conference record with four sacks in a 30-21 victory against Louisiana-Lafayette. ASU (8-2, 6-0) remained unbeaten in Sun Belt play by beating the Ragin Cajuns in what was billed to be a de facto league title game.

Arkansas State’s goal this season was to win the Sun Belt Conference championship. Entering Saturday’s game against North Texas the Red Wolves are well on their way. ASU (5-2, 3-0 Sun Belt Conference) is alone atop the league standings thanks to an unbeaten record in conference play and a Louisiana-Lafayette loss last week. Early in the season Coach Hugh Freeze worked to get his team to believe it could compete for a spot as the conference’s best. Now he’s working to guard against overconfidence or a sense the job is complete.
