by 10/13/2012 6:57 am

Razorbacks Fall Out Of Forbes 'Most Valuable' Basketball Program Rankings

by Chris Bahn 3/20/2012 1:34 pm

Even as Arkansas basketball struggled on the court, the Razorbacks seemed to find themselves in elite company. Forbes.com recognized the basketball program as one of its 20 most profitable in college basketball in 2010. Arkansas was ranked No. 14 on the 2010 list. Though the results on the court didn’t reflect a Top 20 ranking on the floor, that list still put the Razorbacks in the conversation with programs North Carolina, Kentucky and Duke. Not this year.

by 2/25/2012 5:14 pm

Arkansas ended its road losing streak with a 77-71 victory at Auburn. Rickey Scott scored 22 points to lead the Razorbacks, who had been winless away from Bud Walton Arena this season. Arkansas (18-11, 6-8) also lost two games at home after setting an arena record with 17 victories there.

Bahn: Injuries Limit Powell's Contributions, But Young Razorbacks Can Learn From Him

by Chris Bahn 2/21/2012 4:40 pm

Marshawn Powell can’t help Arkansas on the floor. But here’s hoping a few of the current Razorbacks take the same approach Powell did his freshman year. Late in a 2009-10 season that started promisingly then veered off the tracks for the Razorbacks, Powell declared himself as the team’s leader. He then went out and scored 26 points with eight rebounds against South Carolina in a 92-79 victory. Powell’s challenge of teammates’ leadership seemed brash, but it was needed at the time.

Arkansas (17-9, 5-6 Southeastern Conference) is undefeated in Bud Walton Arena this season, with wins over three ranked teams. John Pelphrey is now an assistant with the Gators.

Bahn: Films And Pep Rallies Are Nice, But Time For Lasting Tribute To Nolan Richardson

by Chris Bahn 2/14/2012 9:00 am

There is a next logical step in showing respect to Nolan Richardson. Former players have already begun work behind the scenes to ensure appreciation for Richardson isn’t limited to a museum, the pages of a book, the occasional pep rally celebrating the 1994 National Championship or a documentary. Arkansas needs a more permanent reminder of what he accomplished as a coach, what a great ambassador he was for the state and how hard he fought for others.

Bahn: ESPN Film Not Without Uncomfortable Moments, But Good Portrayal Of Richardson

by Chris Bahn 2/10/2012 3:18 pm

What ESPN's "40 Minutes of Hell" documentary might lack in positive vibes from beginning to end, it makes up for in accuracy. Nolan Richardson’s entire life — from his upbringing in Jim Crow-era El Paso to his coaching stints in junior college and Tulsa to the death of his daughter and eventual success at Arkansas — was full of what narrator Charles Dutton describes as a “beautiful system of anger.”

Arkansas Expats Preview ESPN Film, Talk Nolan Richardson With Author Rus Bradburd

by Chris Bahn 2/7/2012 2:38 pm

Nolan Richardson’s tenure at Arkansas seemed to be filled with equal parts triumph and turmoil. All the fury and anger that seemed to drive his success with the Razorbacks also proved to be his undoing, making his 17 years in Fayetteville an intriguing subject for outsiders. Much of the film will be familiar to Arkansas fans who lived Richardson’s tenure here. It also feels familiar because it comes two years after Rus Bradburd’s book 40 Minutes Of Hell: The Extraordinary Life Of Nolan Richardson was released. Bradburd is very familiar with the complex life of Richardson and is among the interview subjects in the documentary. He appeared earlier this week on a 40-plus minute podcast with the Arkansas Expats.

by Chris Bahn 2/1/2012 12:10 am

This game was at Bud Walton Arena, wasn’t it? Arkansas improved to 16-0 in Fayetteville and knocked off a third team ranked in the Top 25 this month. More specifically, the Razorbacks (16-6, 4-3) won because they shot better than 55-percent from the three-point line, used their quickness to get to loose balls and turned 11 Vanderbilt turnovers into 13 points. Arkansas was able to push the tempo and eclipsed 80 for the first time in seven games and helped hang onto its advantage by hitting 17 of 24 free throws.

Bud Walton Could Be Sold Out For First Time Since 2009 As Razorbacks Face Michigan

by Chris Bahn 1/20/2012 8:46 am

A release from the Arkansas athletic department on Thursday a little after 5 p.m., announced that fewer than 900 tickets remained for Saturday’s game against No. 20 Michigan. Provided those tickets are sold — and there’s a good chance they will be — the Razorbacks will have the first sellout in Bud Walton Arena since 2009.

Full-Court Press: Arkansas 69, LSU 60

by Chris Bahn 1/15/2012 7:43 am

Why Arkansas Won: Coach Mike Anderson described the defensive effort as “great” and the Razorbacks hit 9 of 18 shots from behind the 3-point line. Those two factors were significant in Arkansas (13-5, 2-1) knocking off LSU (11-6, 1-1) and remaining undefeated at Bud Walton Arena. It was a crucial rebound for a young, inexperienced team after suffering a road loss at Ole Miss earlier in the week. LSU committed 16 turnovers and shot just 34.8 percent from the field to aid the Arkansas victory.

Full-Court Press: Arkansas 98, Miss. State 88

by Doc Harper 1/8/2012 9:02 am

Arkansas (12-3, 1-0) worked for the lead in the first half with the kind of swarming defense fans hoped to see when Mike Anderson was hired last spring. The Razorbacks forced 11 turnovers in the period while only committing two of their own. Even though the Hogs shot a lower percentage than Mississippi State (13-3, 0-1) in the first half, Arkansas took 10 more shots and made four more shots to grab the lead.

Full-Court Press: Arkansas 76, CBU 54

by Chris Bahn 11/9/2011 8:00 am

Arkansas showed some patience as Christian Brothers tried to slow the game down and didn’t force bad shots when asked to play in the halfcourt. The Razorbacks hit 56.6 percent of their field goals and used an advantage inside to outscore the Bucs 46-12 in the paint. Turnovers weren’t easy to come by, but Arkansas did turn seven from CBU into 13 points.
