Brandon Peterson had 19 points and nine rebounds to help Arkansas State beat Central Arkansas 71-64 Saturday night in a renewal of an old rivalry. Peterson was 6 of 8 from the field and 7 of 8 from the free-throw line.

Arkansas State Coach Hugh Freeze found a positive in last week’s loss to No. 13 Virginia Tech: It bothered the Red Wolves they lost the game. Instead of accepting they were on the road and lost a game they were favored to lose, Freeze saw a team that didn’t handle the loss. It was something he hadn’t seen as much of in an opening week loss at Illinois.

If you’re going to take over a program, Arkansas State's Hugh Freeze said, it helps to already have a quality quarterback in place, and Ryan Aplin’s numbers scream quality. After playing as Corey Leonard’s backup in 2009, Aplin took the reins last season, Freeze’s first on the ASU staff, and delivered school records in total yards (3,416), passing yards (2,939), touchdowns (21) and pass attempts (410).

UCA Bears Playing It Safe Entering In-State Matchup With ASU Red Wolves

Central Arkansas will be playing to win Saturday’s non-conference, intrastate showcase at Arkansas State. But the Bears will also be playing it safe. Senior quarterback Nathan Dick is out with a concussion sustained in last week’s 31-10, Southland Conference loss at Sam Houston State. Bears’ redshirt sophomore Wynrick Smothers will get his first career start at ASU Stadium in Jonesboro.
