Almost from the day he arrived at Arkansas, Athletic Director Jeff Long had Oct. 25, 2012 highlighted on his calendar. It’s an important date for the athletic department, though no press release or pep rally commemorated what can be viewed as something of a victory for the Razorbacks. No longer is the program operating with the NCAA looking over its shoulder. Arkansas has emerged from the NCAA’s repeat violator window, a place the school mostly operated after major infractions cases in basketball (1997), football (2000) and track (2007).

University of Arkansas Chancellor Dave Gearhart worked at Penn State for 11 years. He’s got an honorary degree from the school. So Gearhart has a unique perspective on what is happening in State College, Penn. The school and its football program were hit with heavy NCAA sanctions after it was learned top Penn State administrators failed to report and engaged in the cover up of sexcual abuse by a former football assistant. Arkansas News Bureau beat reporter Robbie Neiswanger caught up with Gearhart to get his thoughts.

KNWA Report: Razorbacks' Jeff Long A Candidate For Stanford AD Position

A Northwest Arkansas television station reports Stanford has shown interest in Arkansas Athletic Director Jeff Long for its open athletic director’s position. Bob Bowlsby left Stanford to become the Big 12 commissioner, leaving a vacancy. KNWA said Long has not responded to inquires. Long would not discuss the report when reached Thursday. He said via text message he was attending his daughter’s high school graduation.

Razorbacks Break Ground On Football Operations Center

Arkansas broke ground on its new 80,000 square feet football operations center Friday. Chancellor Dave Gearhart, Athletic Director Jeff Long, Fred W. Smith of the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation and football coach Bobby Petrino were among those on hand for the ceremony. Completion of the $30 million project is set for 2013.

Teammates and fans treated James McCann to one of the more jubilant celebrations of his athletic career on Saturday. McCann hit a game-winning home run in the bottom of the ninth against LSU. McCann was part of a little more low-key, but arguably more celebration on Monday. There weren’t a school-record 11,013 on hand to witness it. In fact, not a single Hog Calling fan could be found in the seats of Bud Walton Arena during the Scholar Athlete Awards Dinner.
