Otis Kirk: Razorbacks, Van Horn Looking To Sign 13 Commitments For Baseball

by Otis Kirk, Hawgs247.com 10/4/2012 5:55 pm

The NCAA's early signing period is approaching and Arkansas baseball coach Dave Van Horn doesn't plan on getting left out as the Razorbacks currently have 13 commitments. Arkansas is still busy with fall baseball, but the coaching staff has found time to recruit and add help both on the mound and at the plate. Arkansas advanced to the College World Series last year and has a returning team many feel can get to Omaha again.

College World Series: Gamecocks Erase Deficit Against Razorbacks, Advance To Final Series

by The Associated Press 6/23/2012 8:13 am

The Arkansas bullpen's streak of scoreless innings ended at precisely the wrong time and cost the Razorbacks a spot in the College World Series finals. Reliever Barrett Astin walked Adam Matthews with the bases loaded in the seventh inning, producing South Carolina's go-ahead run in a 3-2 victory Friday night and ended the streak at 26 innings.

College World Series: Pitching Keeps Gamecocks Alive, Forces Arkansas Into Elimination Game

by The Associated Press 6/22/2012 7:46 am

Hours after he watched senior left-hander Michael Roth's two-hitter against Kent State keep South Carolina's season alive, freshman lefty Jordan Montgomery did his best imitation of the Gamecocks' undisputed team leader when he got his turn against Arkansas on Thursday night. Montgomery held the Razorbacks to three singles over eight innings, and the two-time defending national champions won 2-0 to force a rematch Friday night that will decide which team goes to the best-of-three College World Series finals against Arizona.

Birch: Situations Favor Arkansas, But The Razorbacks Must Capitalize

by Brent Birch 6/21/2012 11:00 am

Arkansas got an extra night to rest its pitching staff while awaiting the winner of South Carolina-Kent State in the College World Series. But when they take the field tonight, the Hogs still must deliver.

Jim Harris: Unlike '79, Razorbacks Don't Quite Have CWS Title In Grasp Yet

by Jim Harris 6/20/2012 1:05 pm

Arkansas has never come quite as close to an NCAA baseball championship as the Razorbacks did in 1979. The biggest reason for that is, until late Monday night in Omaha, Neb., the Hogs had only started 2-0 in the College World Series in 1979. Obviously, the deeper a team can go in a double-elimination baseball tournament, the better the chances of taking home the title.

Birch: Razorbacks On Verge Of Program Changing Moment

by Brent Birch 6/19/2012 10:29 am

Close games and narrow escapes have been the norm for Arkansas this year, but the Hogs are right where they wanted to be as they await Thursday's College World Series game against either South Carolina or Kent State. A victory Thursday would vault Arkansas from simply being a very good program to being a national college baseball power.

College World Series: Razorbacks Advance, End Gamecocks' 22-Game NCAA Streak

by 6/19/2012 12:26 am

Another strong pitching performance helped Arkansas to another postseason victory. Ryne Stanek and Barrett Astin proved difficult for two-time defending national champion South Carolina to hit in a 2-1 Razorback victory. They surrendered only four hits and one run as Stanek got the win and Astin the save as the Razorbacks ended South Carolina’s 22-game NCAA Tournament winning streak.

College World Series: Razorbacks Looking To End Gamecocks' 22-Game NCAA Streak

by 6/18/2012 9:49 am

South Carolina continues to add to its postseason resume. Not only have the Gamecocks won two consecutive College World Series titles, they haven’t lost in their previous 22 NCAA Tournament games. Arkansas is next on the list of opponents trying to end South Carolina’s impressive run. That’s just part of the motivation for the Razorbacks (45-20) when the two meet tonight.

Bahn: Razorbacks Remain Confident In Pitchers Entering College World Series

by Chris Bahn 6/15/2012 3:00 pm

Arkansas is one of eight teams to make the College World Series, which begins tonight in Omaha, Neb. Arkansas (44-20) faces Kent State on Saturday at 4 p.m., a postseason game set up for the Razorbacks because of quality starting pitching and a deep pool of relievers from which to choose. Entering the tournament the Razorbacks are tied for top earned run average among the eight remaining teams. Florida and Arkansas have 2.90 ERAs.

Van Horn Gets $25,000 Bonus For 400th Win, Could Earn $100,000 In Omaha

by Chris Bahn 6/15/2012 2:15 pm

Arkansas Coach Dave Van Horn has earned $25,000 in incentive money so far this postseason and could earn additional $100,000 at the College World Series. Van Horn will — at minimum — be paid two months of base UA salary ($230,625) for getting Arkansas to the eight-team tournament final. That's a bonus of $38,438 and winning the national championship would net Van Horn $100,000 bonus. Postseason bonuses are non-cumulative, so $100,000 would be the max for a title.

Birch: Razorbacks Made It To Omaha, Now Looking For More At College World Series

by Brent Birch 6/15/2012 2:10 pm

Arkansas (44-20) is no stranger to Omaha and the College World Series. Senior infielders Bo Bigham and Tim Carver were here in 2009, but this will be the program's first experience in TD Ameritrade Park. Arkansas’ previous six appearances were at the old Rosenblatt Stadium across town. TD Ameritrade opened last year and is a state-of-the-art, 24,000-seat stadium that sits just on the edge of downtown Omaha. The new ballpark is known as a pitcher’s park with spacious playing dimensions. Teams that can pitch and play defense should be able to hang in there, given the long ball shouldn’t be a huge factor because of a wind that blows in and the underwhelming composite bats teams use.

Razorbacks Clinch Trip To College World Series With 10th Inning Win At Baylor

by 6/11/2012 10:49 pm

Arkansas’ preseason goal was a trip to the College World Series. The Razorbacks made it happen. With a 1-0 victory against Baylor on Monday they clinched a spot in the CWS for the first time since 2009. Jake Wise drove in the winning run with a pinch-hit, two-out single in the top of the 10th.

Midseason Lull Fuels Arkansas' Postseason Baseball Run

by The Associated Press 6/7/2012 8:32 am

Matt Reynolds was every bit as frustrated by Arkansas' midseason swoon as everyone else around the program. The Razorbacks third baseman still doesn't fully understand what happened during the 5-8 stretch that saw Arkansas fall from the No. 3 team in the country to nearly out of the rankings altogether. What Reynolds does know is the Razorbacks (42-19) came out of the struggles closer than ever, and he believes it's that unity that led to a sweep of the Houston Regional last weekend. The 2nd-round draft choice of the New York Mets also believes that bond is what will carry Arkansas this weekend when it travels to Waco, Texas, to face Baylor in a super regional.

Reynolds, Sanburn, Baxendale Among Drafted Players With Razorback Ties

by 6/5/2012 11:59 pm

Arkansas third baseman Matt Reynolds and pitcher Nolan Sanburn were both taken in the second round of the Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday. Reynolds went No. 71 to the New York Mets. Sanburn was drafted 74th overall by the Oakland As.

Razorbacks On The Road For Super Regional Against Baylor

by 6/5/2012 10:42 am

Arkansas’ road to Omaha and the College World Series will continue on the road. Thanks to a Baylor win in the Waco Regional, the Razorbacks will travel there for a Super Regional. Had the Bears (48-15) lost it was likely that Arkansas (42-19) would host.

Razorbacks Have Regional Title, Could Host Super Regional At Baum Stadium

by Chris Bahn 6/4/2012 10:25 am

Arkansas has secured its spot in an NCAA Super Regional. There could be further reason to celebrate tonight. If Dallas Baptist wins the Waco Regional with a victory against Baylor tonight, then the Razorbacks will likely host the Super Regional. Arkansas (42-19) will travel to Waco if Baylor, a national seed wins.

Razorbacks Win Houston Regional, Advance With Another Strong Pitching Performance

by 6/3/2012 9:47 pm

Arkansas was supposed to have the sort of pitching that could lead to a postseason run. That has certainly been the case so far. Another strong showing on the mound made the difference Sunday as the Razorbacks won the Houston Regional with a 5-1 victory against Sam Houston State.

Pitching Gem Carries Razorbacks to Regional Final, Van Horn Wins No. 400

by 6/2/2012 9:14 pm

Arkansas needs just one more victory to advance to a super regional. Sophomore Ryne Stanek threw seven scoreless innings for the victory and sophomore Barrett Astin was awarded the save as the Razorbacks defeated Rice 1-0 at the NCAA Houston Regional.

Arkansas Rallies Past Sam Houston State, Advances In Houston Regional

by The Associated Press 6/1/2012 8:10 pm

Arkansas rallied for three runs in the seventh inning to beat Sam Houston State 5-4 on Friday in the opener of the Houston Regional. Sam Houston State had been 30-0 this season when leading after six innings, but Arkansas' comeback ended that perfect mark.
