Jim Harris: Red Wolves, Malzahn Look For Little Rock Presence, Seek BCS-Level Foe

by Jim Harris 3/20/2012 4:19 pm

Why can't this state of nearly 3 million people not only support two NCAA bowl subdivision programs, but two college teams that annually finish in the Top 25 national rankings? Gus Malzahn believes Arkansas can do it. And, if the University of Arkansas is only playing two games a season in Little Rock and is taking its one, alternating years rivalry game (LSU) from War Memorial Stadium to its home campus in Fayetteville, why can't Arkansas State's football program fill a void in Central Arkansas with an annual visit? Malzahn, ASU's new head football coach, believes the Red Wolves can establish such a presence here.

Jim Harris: Malzahn's First Recruiting Class At Arkansas State Stirs The Red Wolves' Fans

by Jim Harris 2/1/2012 6:20 pm

The buzz surrounding Gus Malzahn’s first recruiting class as Arkansas State’s head football coach was spelled out by the large crowd streaming into the Fowler Center on ASU’s campus late Wednesday afternoon, anxious to hear Malzahn’s assessment of his 27-player haul on national signing day. Last year, with fans excited about new head coach Hugh Freeze, about 600 booster club members with free admission overflowed the Cooper Alumni Center. This year, Red Wolf Club director and ASU associate athletic director Doug Doggett said, a ticket was required for admission as the event moved into the more spacious Fowler Center, which can seat more than 900 people. ASU already had sold 750 tickets by Wednesday, according to Doggett.

Jim Harris: Starting With Hogs' Tyler Wilson Greenwood Well-Represented in Touchdown Club's Awards

by Jim Harris 1/27/2012 3:31 pm

A pattern becomes evident with just a quick glance at the brief but illustrious history of the Little Rock Touchdown Club's annual awards. Something's in the water in Greenwood. Daniel Stegall, a former Bulldog quarterback who went on to try professional baseball, was honored as his classification's (4A) player of the year in 2005. Tyler Wilson, who just completed his junior season in leading Arkansas to an 11-2 season, was this year's Southeastern Conference offensive player of the year as chosen by the club. And Drew Morgan, a junior who led Greenwood to yet another Class 5A state crown, was the 5A player of the year.

The senior was rewarded by being selected as the quarterback on this year's Arkansas Associated Press SuperTeam.

Jim Harris: 4A Pulaski Academy Makes Case For Best Overall Team In Arkansas

by Jim Harris 12/10/2011 4:34 pm

The closest anyone came to beating Pulaski Academy in 2011 was Lake Hamilton's 38-28 loss to the Bruins in September. Fayetteville invited PA up for an August scrimmage and, while we put little to no stock in summer exhibition scrimmages and we also know that Fayetteville improved significantly over the season to win the 7A title, the Bulldogs were no match for the Bruins weapons. And nobody snuffed teams defensively quite the way PA did this year. Greenwood was dominant in 5A, but were they this good? It will always be conjecture since we won't see it played out on the field between all the classification winners, but these Bruins, who destroyed 4A-7 rival Malvern on Saturday 63-28 for the 4A state championship, appear to reign supreme over the rest of the state's best.

Prep Football: PA Bruins Bury CAC, Parkview Wallops Mills in Kickoff Classic Opening Night

by Jim Harris 8/29/2011 10:46 pm

Junior quarterback Caelon Harden rushed for 132 yards and a touchdown and passed for two scores in leading Little Rock Parkview to a 39-12 romp over Little Rock Mills in the opening game of the Arkansas High School Kickoff Classic at War Memorial Stadium. As one-sided as that matchup was, it didn't match the nightcap, as top-ranked Class 4A Pulaski Academy used its high-octane offense and a fast, much-improved defense to overwhelm Central Arkansas Christian 54-14.

Jim Harris: Local Prep Rivalries In Kickoff Classic May Be 'Friendly,' But They Look Fierce On Field

by Jim Harris 8/24/2011 4:10 pm

Understandably, Central Arkansas Christian Coach Tommy Shoemaker is hoping for a low-scoring game when his Mustangs open the season on Monday against Pulaski Academy. "Low scoring and controlling the ball," he said. His Mustangs last year were one of 14 Pulaski Academy opponents who couldn't keep up when a football game broke out into a track meet, and Shoemaker knows a wide-open game favors talented Pulaski Academy again this year in the Arkansas High School Kickoff Classic.
