by Associated Press 7/27/2012 11:22 am

The first-year Blazers coach has a much bigger job ahead in renovating a football program that has seen little success on the field, struggled to draw crowds and been spurned by University of Alabama system trustees in efforts to build an on-campus stadium. So McGee starts with the foundational things, even down to the decor.

Garrick McGee Praises Arkansas Leadership In 'Unfortunate' Petrino Situation

by Chris Bahn 4/8/2012 8:05 am

Garrick McGee has strong ties to Arkansas Coach Bobby Petrino. They’ve known each other since McGee was a freshman quarterback and Petrino his position coach at Arizona State. McGee spent four seasons on Petrino’s Razorback staff before leaving for the head coaching position at Alabama-Birmingham. So McGee also feels a connection with the state of Arkansas. Which is what makes seeing the current situation — Petrino on administrative leave following a motorcycle accident on April 1 that included a female member of the football staff — difficult for McGee to process. McGee told Birmingham media it is difficult to watch as his friend and former program are impacted by Petrino's misstep.

Moore (6-0, 173 pounds) attended a Junior Day at Arkansas on March 3. Moore and three of his teammates took in all the things Arkansas has to offer during the visit and Moore said they left impressed.

Given time to evaluate all the moves made in the offseason, CBSSPorts.com ranked Malzhan as the No. 4 best coaching hire in college football. He finished behind three established head coaches who have had major success elsewhere, including Urban Meyer, Rich Rodriguez and Mike Leach.

Bahn: Razorback Staff Turnover Might Have Helped Late Push For Key Defensive Additions

by Chris Bahn 2/1/2012 6:10 pm

Thanking assistant coaches is a pretty routine part of national signing day. Head coaches across the country routinely give their staffs credit for a year’s recruiting haul. It’s hard to imagine Bobby Petrino ever being more grateful for the assistants than he is this year. Arkansas endured coaching turnover unlike any other year in his tenure. Somehow the new — and late — additions to the staff were able to close strong.

It appears the Arkansas on-field coaching staff is complete. Following the announcement of Paul Haynes as defensive coordinator a day earlier, Bobby Petrino said the staff’s other defensive opening will be filled by Kevin Peoples, who has been working in an administrative capacity the last two seasons. Peoples previously coached the defensive line at Arkansas State before joining the Razorbacks. Additionally, Steve Caldwell will assume the title of special teams coordinator formerly held by John L. Smith, who left earlier this week to become the head coach at Weber State.

Jim Harris' Notebook: LSU' Chavis at the Top With 2011 Broyles Award

by Jim Harris 12/6/2011 3:39 pm

The past two winners of the Broyles Award for the year's best college football assistant coach also saw their teams go on to win the BCS national championship. John Chavis is the defensive coordinator for top-ranked LSU, which will play Alabama in the national title game on Jan. 9. Does he like the odds, knowing his two predecessors for the award shared in the championship crystal? "Only if we win the final game," he said with a laugh Tuesday at the Peabody Little Rock ballroom. "We'll see if we can make it three in a row."

Bahn: Positive Energy From McGee, Smith Important For Razorbacks To Replace

by Chris Bahn 12/6/2011 2:10 pm

Hiring staff is an underrated and often overlooked ability of a head coach. Some are able to plug and play like they do when players get injured. Others never seem to recover from major staff changes. With that in mind, it appears we're hitting an important stretch of Bobby Petrino’s tenure with the Razorbacks, particularly if the carousel doesn't stop with Garrick McGee and John L. Smith.
