Jim Harris: A Flip Of A Switch, And Then We're Gone

by Jim Harris 11/2/2012 12:32 pm

As I try to conjure the right words, and to say it all within the confines of the average reader’s attention span, the clock ticks ever so closer to this site’s final moments. I look at that clock like the condemned prisoner, knowing that they’ll flip the switch at 11:59 p.m. They’ll flip the switch off, cutting the current, however; and I’m only sweating getting this in by afternoon deadline, and knowing I’ll have another day, at maybe another website, to ply my trade. The last time I went through this, they (you know who “they” are) cut the power to the computers before we at the Arkansas Gazette had a chance to say any last words. It’s the winds of October and now early November that ever remind me of those strange days in 1991.

Jim Harris: Malzahn Can’t Help But Be Noticed By Big-Time Programs Now With Convincing Victories

by Jim Harris 10/24/2012 2:48 pm

We’ve all heard that Gus Malzahn is in it for the long haul in Jonesboro. He’s said it himself. He’s not a one-and-done for the Arkansas State Red Wolves, but instead he intends to build the Red Wolves into a program that can compete for a Top 25 ranking annually. We’re glad he says it, and we hope he really means it. The problem is, Gus, if you keep hanging half-a-hundred on the hot-name coaches in the Sun Belt Conference on their home fields week after week, you’re going to have a decision to make. And while money may not always matter, this much money at these kinds of programs will matter.

Jim Harris: Arkansas-Kentucky Usually Guarantees An Odd Outcome

by Jim Harris 10/10/2012 2:33 pm

Of Arkansas’ Southeastern Conference rivals, Kentucky would seem the least likely, next to Vanderbilt, to have an edge over the Razorbacks in the all-time series. The Hogs and Wildcats have met just six times, though, and Kentucky holds a 4-2 edge. The trend for this series is, nothing seems to go as expected, and that’s probably what we should count on Saturday in Fayetteville, even if Kentucky is down to its fourth quarterback and has three injured regulars in the secondary.

Doc Harper: Arkansas Razorbacks Football Is Not 'Just A Game'

by Doc Harper 10/1/2012 10:11 am

Events can put college football in perspective, but there is no arguing it has a place and to true fans it offers more than simple escapism. Arkansas' recent woes underscore just how much a team can mean to its followers.

Jim Harris: Arkansas Is Falling Further Behind A&M And Other Big-Money SEC Powerhouses

by Jim Harris 9/28/2012 9:35 am

What I remember of my first trip to Texas A&M for a football game, being on the sidelines all afternoon in Kyle Field, was how amazingly and thunderously loud 50,000 Aggie fans could sound. More than a generation later, Kyle Field holds more than 90,000 fans, and the Bryan (Texas) Eagle reported earlier this week that A&M has a $450 million stadium expansion in the works to bring capacity over 100,000. A&M is already among the top seven stadiums in capacity in the SEC and will join Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia in the six-figure range in coming years. It’s doubtful LSU or Florida will lag too much behind them, and Auburn won’t sit pat with an 87,000 capacity at Jordan-Hare. South Carolina likely will remain in the high 80,000s for the time being. Then, you’ll have Arkansas, Missouri and Kentucky in the low 70,000s-high 60,000s, followed by the two Mississippi schools in the low 60,000s and Vanderbilt in the 50,000s. That sounds awfully like the pecking order of the league when it comes to football.

Saturday Roulette: A Razorbacks Loss Still Hurts When Your Fantasy Bets Are Winners

by Doc Harper 9/14/2012 8:58 am

Recovering from ULM 34, Arkansas 31 (OT) just in time for this week's fantasy bets. Look for Alabama to cover the spread, although Doc wouldn't complain if Arkansas proved him wrong.

Jim's Notebook: Hog Fans Wild About Current Team; First Tee Grand Opening

by Jim Harris 8/24/2012 2:15 pm

Last Saturday's Arkansas football scrimmage in Fayetteville drew an estimated 15,000 fans, and I have no doubt that tonight, if there is a chance to see Knile Davis actually be tackled plus another chance to get autographs as at last week's Fan Day, the turnout would maybe double last week's. The numbers of fans willing to wait hours for autographs last week and then to wait five hours to see a scrimmage says that Hog Nation is as excited about these Razorbacks as any UA team ever.
