With the Sun Belt Conference champion Red Wolves headed to the GoDaddy.com Bowl looking for an 11th win, quarterback Ryan Aplin now knows what the program is capable of achieving. So, when new Arkansas State coach Gus Malzahn — hired Wednesday to replace Hugh Freeze – began talking about turning the program into a consistent Top 25 program, the Red Wolves starting quarterback wasn't caught off guard.

Knowing where Gus Malzahn was a year ago, ASU Athletic Director Dean Lee was still a little stunned that ASU had just landed him as its 28th head coach. Lee's reaction post-Malzahn press conference was no different than most of the college football following public. Everybody was trying to make sense of how Malzahn wound up at Arkansas State, a school that won the Sun Belt title outright for the first time since joining the league. Could Lee have imagined hiring Malzahn was possible a year ago or, heck, even a week ago?

Last year, Illinois opened the season in an NFL stadium against Missouri, a Big 12 team that has made a habit of making it to a bowl game. This week, the Illini are getting ready for their opener against Arkansas State, a middling team from the Sun Belt Conference — an opponent that so far has underwhelmed the ticket-buying public. But Illinois' players, some of who were talking openly a couple of weeks ago about getting to a quality bowl, now say they're putting those thoughts aside to focus on the Red Wolves alone. Call the Illini cautious as they get ready to open the season Saturday in Champaign.

Every facet of the Arkansas State football program under first-year Coach Hugh Freeze can seemingly be boiled down into one, succinct mission statement. For example, Freeze has what he labels as an “It” for his offensive, defensive and special teams philosophies. Freeze's “It” when talking about recruiting? That's not so simple to define.
