Two-Minute Drill: Arkansas 29, Kansas State 16

by Chris Bahn 1/7/2012 9:43 am

Arkansas used big plays on special teams, depth of playmakers on offense and arguably its best defensive performance of the season to secure only the third 11-win season in school history in beating Kansas State in the 76th Cotton Bowl. Defense and special teams bailed the team out early when the offense couldn’t move, staking the Razorbacks to a 10-0 lead before they recorded a first down. New defensive coordinator Paul Haynes seemed to make a difference as Arkansas allowed just 87 yards rushing. The Razorbacks finished with 345 yards of total offense, primarily on the strength of 216 yards passing from Tyler Wilson.

Jim Harris: Lacewell Sees Major Changes Over The Years In Defense

by Jim Harris 10/24/2011 3:45 pm

Rex Nelson, one of the weekly presenters of the Little Rock Touchdown Club program each week, rattled off a series of state college football scores that sounded more suitable for a basketball result. Around the country the past few years, it's nothing to see 50 or more points put up by offenses in a game — sometimes by both teams. This isn't your dad's or granddad's colllege football anymore, at least not on the defensive side. Larry Lacewell, one of the preeminent defensive minds as a coordinator at Oklahoma during the Sooners' 1970s heyday and at Tennessee during back-to-back Southeastern Conference title runs in the early 1990s, has noticed the difference from the way defenses are playing now to how it was when he was roaming the sidelines.

Good morning -- early, early good morning, in fact, when it comes to college football. The photo accompanying this report is from 9 a.m., two hours before kickoff, as few if any fans had streamed in from their canopies and tailgates along Collins Avenue (west of Cowboys Stadium), or from the shindig being set up on the east side, where a band was about to get folks foot-stomping, whether they're red-draped Hog fans or maroon Aggies here for the third annual Southwest Classic. We invite you to follow our running coverage of Arkansas' football game with Texas A&M at Jerry Jones' Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
