USA Truck Inc. CEO John Simone said Thursday that he is being treated for lung cancer, and that while he and his doctors are optimistic, he's not sure yet when he'll return to the company. "I intend to return as soon as medically advisable, and I am hoping that will be sometime this summer," he wrote.

Listen to any Arkansas trucking company executive — with the possible exception of unionized ABF Freight — and you will hear lamentations about driver shortages in the industry. Short of cultural change to repopularize the job, executives know they have to pay more to attract drivers and work harder to keep them. The trend doesn’t look like it is going to get any better anytime soon.

USA Truck Reports First Profitable Quarter Since 2011

USA Truck of Van Buren reported its first profitable quarter since 2011 on Thursday, bringing in net income of $700,000, or 7 cents per share. The profit came even after a tough first half of the year marked by hard winter weather and a driver shortage that continues to dog the industry.
