Student entrepreneurs are enjoying a new level of credibility thanks to their mastery of technology, specifically social media, which when properly leveraged can turn a product from an idea into a sensation overnight.
A team of six science and art students from Mount St. Mary Academy in Little Rock won $25,000 in the 2016 Lexus Eco Challenge, a national STEM contest that encourages middle and high school students to start environmental programs that help their communities.

College ball won’t be the only fierce competition hitting the courts in March. Special Olympics Arkansas will once again host its State Basketball Tournament this month. Special Olympics participants can engage in a wide variety of athletic options throughout the year—from track to golf and everything in between—and the State Basketball Tournament dates back to the early 70s. More than 40 years later, 45-50 teams participate every year.
Mount St. Mary Academy is in the midst of a $500,000 campus improvement plan to add on-campus parking “while also improving the flow of traffic and campus aesthetics,” according to a letter mailed to neighbors of the school in Hillcrest.
Pulaski Heights Elementary students in kindergarten through fifth grade raised over $14,000 at the school’s inaugural “Joggin’ for the Garden” jog-a-thon in the fall. The proceeds from the active fundraiser will help finance an outdoor classroom to enhance the students’ learning experiences in the garden.
Mount St. Mary alumnae, parents and community leaders gathered at the Peabody Ballroom for the Mercy & Me luncheon. The luncheon provided an opportunity for MSM alumnae and friends to celebrate Mercy-inspired leadership in Little Rock.
A party purchased from Mount St. Mary’s Dinner Belles auction, Senoritas and Margaritas, was hosted by members of MSM’s class of ‘95: Robyn Allmendinger, Sydney Bueter Blackmon, Jenny Crews Faulkner, Amy Kemp Harkins, Nikki Hite and Jossie Valentine. The party was held at the home of Sydney Bueter Blackmon. The next Dinner Belles auction will be held February 3, 2011.
