Saturday Roulette: A Razorbacks Loss Still Hurts When Your Fantasy Bets Are Winners

by Doc Harper 9/14/2012 8:58 am

Recovering from ULM 34, Arkansas 31 (OT) just in time for this week's fantasy bets. Look for Alabama to cover the spread, although Doc wouldn't complain if Arkansas proved him wrong.

Two-Minute Drill: No. Ill. 38, Arkansas State 20

by Chris Bahn 1/9/2012 10:59 am

Why ASU Lost: After falling behind 13-0, Northern Illinois scored 31 unanswered points to take control of the game. Arkansas State (10-3) started fast, but couldn’t keep the momentum going and seemed slow in countering once the Huskies (11-3) made early adjustments. ASU had a nine-game winning streak end, turning the ball over five times. Quarterback Ryan Aplin had an off night, throwing three interceptions while completing 30 of 58 passes for 352 yards and a touchdown. Aplin was sacked three times for a loss of 17 yards, a stat that factored into the team netting only 28 rushing yards.

by The Associated Press 1/8/2012 9:21 am

Arkansas State is trying to extend its nine-game winning streak and get a victory in its first bowl appearance since 2005. The Red Wolves won the Sun Belt Conference and are trying for their first bowl victory since 1970. Northern Illinois has an eight-game winning streak and is the Mid-American Conference champion. The Huskies are trying for their 11th win in coach Dave Doeren's first season.

Malzahn Only Watching, Not Coaching Red Wolves In Bowl; No Update On Michael Dyer

by Chris Bahn 1/7/2012 6:47 pm

New Arkansas State Coach Gus Malzahn will be on hand for the GoDaddy.com Bowl. But he isn’t coaching the bowl and made it clear he’s had no input in preparations for Sunday’s 8 p.m. game against Northern Illinois. Malzahn, who wrapped up his time at Auburn by overseeing the offense in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl on Dec. 31, said he’s just going to enjoy watching football. There will be no stress, just an opportunity to watch and lend support to a team that will soon be his.

Despite Coaching Changes, Arkansas State Hopes Winning Ways Remain the Same

by Daniel McFadin 1/7/2012 9:45 am

There has been more than enough change at Arkansas State over the last month. Coaches departing, coaches hired and what might seem on the outside like a bit of instability. Interim coach David Gunn sees something else. Red Wolves players and the style of play that got them to 10 wins and a spot to play Northern Illinois in Sunday’s GoDaddy.com Bowl are no different than they were throughout the season.

Saturday Roulette: Season Comes To End With Razorbacks, Red Wolves And BCS Title Game

by Doc Harper 1/6/2012 9:47 am

Bowl games create a sense of urgency, a feeling of “I know I’ve already had three plates, but I paid for an all-you-can-eat buffet so I’m going back for ice cream.” Bowl games are the ice cream. We don’t need them or particularly want them, but they are fun and we feel incomplete without them. So Saturday Roulette is going all out. With these last three games, we’re picking the winner against the spread, and the over/under.

Bahn: Malzahn Enjoying 'Process,' Turning Attention To Recruiting And Finalizing Staff

by Chris Bahn 1/5/2012 12:00 pm

Technically, Gus Malzahn has begun operating out of his office at the Arkansas State football complex. Malzahn has been inside his office. Maybe even made a phone call or two. But he’s still got a little ways to go before it is fully operational. Not that he'd be spending much time there right now.

Red Wolves' Malzahn Appears On ESPNU To Talk Alabama Defense Pre-BCS Title Game

by Chris Bahn 1/4/2012 10:42 am

Arkansas State Coach Gus Malzahn is as qualified as anybody to break down the national championship game between No. 1 LSU and No. 2Alabama. During three years at Auburn he faced both defenses with varying degrees of success. Malzahn recently joined host Dari Nowkah on ESPNU’s College Football Wraparound to break down Alabama’s defense. This, of course, is exactly the sort of publicity that ASU was hoping for when it hired Malzahn, one of the top offensive coordinators in the country.
