About this point in the season last year, Arkansas was way behind its opponents in takeaways. Then-head coach Bobby Petrino seemed to credit it mostly to luck — he insisted the turnovers would start balancing out the Razorbacks’ way. If we apply that logic to this Hog team under Petrino’s successor, John L. Smith, then turnovers should start coming Arkansas’ way by the bushel. In just three games, Arkansas is minus-8 in the turnover margin: six lost fumbles and four interceptions while claiming one fumble and one interception.

From Lonoke to Lake Village, teams from ages 11 years old and below have withstood the heat while competing for state championships and the right to continue on with their baseball seasons on the regional level, some still dreaming of making a World Series some where. Beginning Friday (July 6), the Cal Ripken Baseball 12-year-old state tournament will be staged at the Bill and Skeeter Dickey Complex — the home of the Little Rock Junior Deputy organization — off Cantrell Road. Junior Deputy will be just getting started when the state tournament concludes. Beginning July 19, the Little Rock ballpark will play host to the 12-and-under Cal Ripken Southwest Regional.

Lake Hamilton’s Time Is Now in 6A

Since winning the 2008 Class 6A state championship, Lake Hamilton has found Pine Bluff and two-time champ El Dorado the thorns in the side, suffering back-to-back heartbreaking setbacks in the playoff semifinals. Along the way, a lot of young Wolves have grown up. And, while veteran coach Jerry Clay doesn’t believe in it being his team’s “turn” to win 6A, Clay expects his squad to be in the mix.

Jonesboro spotted Little Rock Hall a first touchdown and then ran off 44 unanswered points to roll to a 44-6 win and take the top 6A playoff seed from the East conference, while El Dorado upended Pine Bluff 34-26 in El Dorado to win the 6A-South conference in Thursday night high school action.
