Elizabeth Fortune, along with Colin Hall and others are running away with the inaugural Fighting Red 5K, Saturday, Oct. 5. The race begins at 8 a.m. on the Cook’s Landing side of the Big Dam Bridge, and registrants and attendees are encouraged to get swabbed and added to the database. While the act of tithing might be centuries old, churches are doing what they can to provide parishioners with 21st century giving options. The use of cash and checks continues to decline in most areas of day-to-day life. E-commerce sales topped $1 trillion globally in 2012, so churches — institutions that have relied for years on cash and check donations — are finding it critical to adapt to changing consumer habits.

A blessing of the animals will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 7) at Quapaw Quarter United Methodist Church, followed by another blessing ceremony at 4 p.m. by Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church at War Memorial Park at the corner of Fair Park Boulevard and West Markham Street. Admission to both is free.

Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church began sponsoring an annual medical mission team to Guatemala in 2001. The group celebrated with an event honoring Gwen Efird, RN, who has led the teams for 10 years. The event also raised funds for the group’s 2012 trip.
