Ryan Aplin’s talents extend beyond the football field. Aplin, the record-setting Arkansas State quarterback, was named Sun Belt Conference Student-Athlete of the Year during the league’s summer meetings. Aplin is the second Red Wolves athlete in three years to earn the award, which recognizes athletic and academic achievement.

Gus Malzahn has completed his Arkansas State coaching staff and salaries are set, with a slight bump from last season. Total salary pool has increased approximately five percent with the biggest jumps coming in coordinator pay.

Kenny Ingram’s status as an interim assistant at Arkansas State has been upgraded. Ingram, the former Memphis defensive coordinator, has been added to Gus Malzahn’s staff at ASU as defensive line coach. Ingram was serving as a temporary assistant for the Red Wolves during preparation for the GoDaddy.com Bowl.

Another former Auburn player will be joining Gus Malzahn at Arkansas State. Kodi Burns, a Fort Smith native, is back in his home state as part of Malzahn’s coaching staff. Burns, who played quarterback and wide receiver at Auburn, will work as an offensive graduate assistant.

Rhett Lashlee has been named offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Arkansas State. Lashlee comes to ASU?after serving as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2011 at Samford, where he installed a high-tempo offense that improved the Bulldog’s national ranking in total offense from No. 57 in the nation to No. 36 over the course of just one year.

Wes Byrum kicked a 19-yard field goal as time expired and No. 1 Auburn beat No. 2 Oregon 22-19 to win the BCS national championship Monday night. Oregon had tied it at 19 with 2:33 left when Darron Thomas connected with Jeff Maehl on a tying 2-point conversion after LaMichael James scored on a shovel pass.
