Big Brothers Big Sisters Toast & Roast

by Staff 10/1/2013 12:01 am

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arkansas (BBBSCA) hosted the 39th annual Toast & Roast at the DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Little Rock. The event — which honored Executive Director of the Downtown Little Rock Partnership Sharon Priest — consisted of a reception and silent auction followed by dinner, a live auction and the program. This year marked a milestone, as it was the first time in the event’s history in which a woman was selected as the honoree. Antwan Davis and Michael Irvin served as event co-chairs. Proceeds from this event allow BBBSCA to continue their mission of providing children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. The BBBSCA has been putting on the Toast & Roast since 1975 and has raised more than $1.2 million for youth programs over the years.

by Amanda Hoelzeman 8/1/2013 12:00 am

Antwan Phillips believes his life is different today because of the mentors he had growing up. An associate at Wright, Lindsey & Jennings, Phillips didn’t have an official Big Brother through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arkansas, but he did have two amazing mentors — Virgil Miller and Dean Kumpuris — whom he met through the Arkansas Commitment program. It’s these positive mentor experiences and Debbie Knight’s invitation in 2009 that led Phillips to join the board of BBBSCA in 2010. Now, along with fellow board member Michael Irvin, he is co-chairing the BBBSCA Toast & Roast honoring Downtown Partnership Executive Director Sharon Priest. Below, Antwan shares more about the important role BBBSCA plays in our community.
